tanabe exhaust system. is it really 50 state legal?
i currently bought a 2000 honda accord coupe v6.
it came with a tanabe full catback racing medalion exhaust system.
this is what i currently know:
California currently does have a noise regulation for modified mufflers.
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27151.htm
on this webpage it says that the noise level cannot exceed 95dbA.
and on the website,
http://www.autocarparts.com/p_Tanabe/
it stats that the catback system that i own is legal.
but the problem that im having is:
i have asked around and saying if my exhaust system is going to lead me to fix it tickets, and most people says that it will. they told me that if my exhaust system was legal it would have come with paperwork saying that my exhaust system was legal and would give me a card saying that i passed the noise and smog test, which i never recieved from the previous owner.
so i guess what im really asking is can i drive my accord around legally with this exhaust system in it?

If you get pulled over you'll get a fix it ticket. You can then set up an appointment by calling a number provided when you call the CHP office to have it tested by the BAR association, and if it passes they will provide you with aformentioned paperwork.
If you take that paperwork to court you wont have to pay for your ticket, nor any subsequent time you're pulled over and have the information in hand.
Thats how it worked out for me and it should be the same, given that rules or procedures havent changed. GL

Living on the Right Coast, I'm not totally clear on CARB regulations; but in my oppinion it will not be an issue. My reasoning.... if the original exhaust had provisions for mounting emissions components and the aftermarket unit didn't, THEN there would be an issue. IF (however), the original had no provisions and the aftermarket unit doesn't either, then where's the foul?
Perhaps there's a proceedure where you could either ask for an advisory, or have the car certified.
