ZC Turbo Project CRX, Phase 1: Getting the car, engine, etc...help...
I am selling my B16a CRX in order to start a turbo'd ZC project. I am looking to spend about $1,500 for the car, and drop in the ZC within the next few months. Can you guys provide me with some information on the ZC engine, along with some recommendations as far as the Turbo's commonly used? I also have a few questions:
1. A/C... How easy is it going to be for me to be able to keep A/C in the car...and the turbo?
2. How much money (Total) am I looking at spending? I think I should have enough after selling my CRX in order to do this w/o any major strains.
3. Reliability? I'm plannin on runnin no more than 8psi at the start. Can the stock ZC internals handle this, and for how long? Is an intercooler a requirement for this amount of psi, or can it be bypassed for now for a nice shiny BOV
?
4. Black/Brown top ZC's? What are the differences, and which would I use in an 88-91 CRX Si?
5. What kind of times am I looking at? Right now my best E/T is 14.8@95 in my B16a. How much faster/slower will the turbo ZC be, or should I stick w/ the B16a?
6. What is the engine (d) # for the ZC, and what interchanges w/it (if anything)?
I have seen a few ZC'd CRX's around, and they are running high 15's w/o turbo... I enjoy the VTEC, but I don't NEED it. A/C is out of the question for this CRX, and that's why I want to get rid of it. I am fairly familiar w/ the B series engines, as I have done all of my own work on this one (I bought the car w/ the swap, but all upgrades/maintenance has been done to my car by...me). I hear the ZC is the easiest swap for a CRX Si, and am pretty confident I can do it. What kind of tips/tricks can you guys give me in order to make this as painless as possible? Any and all help appreciated, as I will hopefully be in here with you F/I guys soon...

No. I'm looking to sell my B16a CRX and get another 2g to do the turbo on.
I like my B16a and all, but I have always wanted a turbo...and don't mind not having the VTEC if I can have the turbo/AC...

are you looking to build up the ZC for boost....?
only a few hand-full of us doing that sort of build up.

2.) Nada clue.
3.) Again, don't know.
4.) Only get a black top. Brown tops are USDM ZC's, from early Integras, only put about about 118hp, and you need mount kits to get into an EF.
5.) w/ 8PSI, I'd say mid to high 13's.
6.) Engine code is actually "ZC". That's what is stamped on the block. Brown tops is D16 something or another, but nobody cares about them. ;-) I've seen a few lists of ZC websites, some of which have part numbers for a buncha' parts, mainly maintenance stuff, that you can get in US for your ZC.
Keep me up to date on how your builup goes, I've wanted to do something similar.l

Yes. What kind of times do you pull w/ yours, and how much do you have in the engine/turbo? How many psi do you run, and how is the engine holding up?

well I don't really have any conclusive times yet as the first time I went I had MAJOR problems....
-Burnt out clutch that would not hold past 3000
-NO launch what so ever, as the clutch would have been toast.
-wastegate actuator that would give me only 3psi of boost.
I ended up doing half of the 1/4 in 5th gear to keep the clutch from slipping(still slipped)!
My time?.....a 16.5
I am now(as we speak) replacing the clutch with an Exedy unit...and replacing the wastegate actuator.
After I break in the clutch, I am going to go to the track again...
I expect to see low 14's...and maybe break into the 13's with 12psi of boost.
I am using stock internals....have been for the past 9 months with no problems at all....daily driven.
