Default Question Regarding Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

I've recently upgraded my 88 Prelude to a 2001 5th Gen Prelude w/ vtech engine.
I'm not very knowledgeable about cars but any information you need and can point me in the right direction I'll get it! :D

The other day the check engine light came on after I noticed the engine wasn't sounding quite right.

I took it to my local Honda dealer and the code they got was a
P0122 7 TP Sensor Circuit Low Input

I'm assuming this is a Throttle Position Sensor?
Every Auto part store is unable to find it in their systems.
Honda dealer wanted 1700 dollars to replace the "Throttle body sensor"

I took it back to my normal dealer and all he could find was a $700-800 Throttle body and Sensor part.

I've seen links on here pointing to various TP Sensors but how do i know they will work with mine? Do I have to buy the Throttle body and sensor?

Example website I found for the Sensor listed these:

1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude SiR ( JDM ) H22A
1999 to 2001 Honda Prelude H22A
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude Type S ( JDM ) H22A
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude ( USDM ) H22A4

Thanks

omni power makes one for your car. Very cheap, reliable. Its about your only option for a new one that wont cost you an arm and a leg.

I bought 3 for $40 each about a month ago on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/OMNI-...Q5fAccessories

1700 dollars, 700-800 dolllars just to change the TPS.

You can buy whole new engines for that much.

It takes about about 30 mins to reinstall and calibrate a TPS.

Only 30 mins?

What tools (cost?) would I need to calibrate it and are there any links showing how to replace it or recommended book on how to do it?

Thanks

Honda doesn't sell the TPS separately. You have to buy a whole throttle body from them (which is retarded, I know).

Which is why you go used, junkyard, or aftermarket.

The auction is closed but you get the idea.

While were on the subject: will a tps that isnt calibrated affect performance. mine reads -8 closed, 89 open. And how the hell are you supposed to check the voltage. I tried but dint know where to stick the probes. I looked in the service man but i dont understand how u can checkk voltage if u disconnect the harness.

Where are you getting the -8/89 numbers? Datalogging off something?

It will definitely affect driveability.

yeah freelog using the motes hulog. I know what the voltage should be but how do I test it? And when I "jab" the throttle when its idleing it vibrates for a split second. I do have innovative mounts tho. I wonder if that is related to throttle tip in.

Back to one of my original questions....

How do I tell if i have a h22 or h23 or whatever?

This TPS shows:
1990 to 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0 S B20A3
1990 to 1991 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si B20A5
1988 to 1989 Honda Prelude Si B0A5
1990 to 1991 Honda Prelude Si B21A1
1992 to 1996 Honda Prelude Si F22
1992 to 1996 Honda Prelude S F22A1
1992 to 1996 Honda Prelude VTEC H22
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude SiR ( JDM ) H22A
1999 to 2001 Honda Prelude H22A
1887 to 2001 Honda Prelude Type S ( JDM ) H22A
1997 to 1998 Honda Prelude H22A1
1993 to 1996 Honda Prelude VTEC ( USDM ) H22A1
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude ( USDM ) H22A4
1993 to 1995 Honda Prelude Type S ( JDM ) H23
1992 to 1996 Honda Prelude SE Si H22A1

And being that my Lude is a 2001 VTEC
That leaves
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude SiR ( JDM ) H22A
1999 to 2001 Honda Prelude H22A
1887 to 2001 Honda Prelude Type S ( JDM ) H22A
1997 to 2001 Honda Prelude ( USDM ) H22A4

And none of those show VTEC like the others....like i said i'm petty noobish when it comes to engines!

Thanks again

I would just use the datalog to set it, screw the voltage...freelog is already reading the voltage for you.

Tip in/out and lift off fuel cut are big TPS-related things.

Urlryn, if you live in US/Canada, your 2001 Prelude will have a H22A4 and you do fall in that list.

If you take a small safety pin(diaper pin) and slide it down between the wire and the gasket on the back of the connector then you get your reading off the pins. The calibration is usually done with the ignition on but engine not running and the TPS is connected.

If you're in the US, then you most likely have the H22A4 (USDM). The other three are Japanese and would be right-hand drive. However, it is possible that a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) engine was swapped into your United States Domestic Market (USDM) car. Checking the stamp on the block should tell you. I'm guessing you have the H22A4.

YEah you more than likely have the H22a4 if your in the US. There is a stamp on the engine block to the left of the header. It will list the engine model that u have.

Another question that just came to mind....

I read someplace that Honda rivets the TPS into the Throttle body thats why they are sold as a unit rather than seperately?

This true?

Whats the easiest way to put this back? Normally you just drill the rivets to get them out but I don't have a rivet gun to put them back...what do you guys do?

They're not rivets, they're just bolts with a flush head. Notch the tops of them so that you can screw them out and back in with a screwdriver, or something like that.

I swapped my f22 im to an h23 im on my 92. After i grinded off the tops of the TPMS screws I just pulled the sensor of the f22 throttle body and swapped it over to my h23 throttle body. Then I just just vice pliers to unscrew what was left. I used some parts store screws to secure it to the h23 IM and then called it a day.
