Default Illinois smog check?

Alright, so I'm a semi-new resident of IL (moved here in Nov. of '07). When I moved, I had heard that vehicles '93 and older did not need inspection or smogging. That seemed to fit, as I registered my '93 Civic and a '93 Jeep, and the DMV said nothing about it, and I received no notice requiring smogging. I've been pulled over in both vehicles, and did not flag a suspended registration on the cop computer or anything.

HOWEVER, now I'm about to register another car (2003), and anticipate smogging. Looking at the state DMV website (http://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/depar...r-vehicles.php) that says that ALL vehicles must be smogged, except for those on the exception list. Which does not include "Vehicles '93 and older."

So has something changed? Is the '93 thing an unwritten law? What gives?

In addition to that, I see mention of an inspection for vehicles, but then nothing outlined. Do I need to get a safety inspection of the new car prior to titling and tagging? I'm hoping not, since I'm bringing it from out-of-state and wanted to get legal tags first to drive it home.

Meanwhile, woohoo Governor, way to set an example!

You know BauleyCivic so I gotta help, 95 and older only have to do smog testing once they are registered and after you pass once then you wont be asked to take it again... I could be wrong but I do know its 95 or older...

its pre obd2 vehicles that are exempt from smog, its for good also. i did my last smog test in 05 on my 94 civic and both vehicles since ive had since then (both obd0) never required smogging

edit: i believe this is statewide but im not 100% positive

You guys know anything about a safety inspection? In MD we'd have to get a car "inspected" before registering/titling it.

i don't think they make you smog them at all any more. or atleast the past 3 cars i have bought were 2 95's and my newest is a 93 and i have never once taken a smog test in the past 5 years. but then again im from the boonies, lol so what do i know ;-)

yeah no kidding i always wonder how many completely dangerous cars are on the road around us...

to the OP:

It also depends where you are moving too, where i live there is alot of farms, and apparently in area's where they use alot of farm vehicals they pretty much don't even bother with making people from that area go.

Well, I'm living in Naperville right now, but there are plenty of smoking rusted-out shitcrates here that I can't imagine it's strongly enforced.
