No. You can not legally put the head from a different engine on your engine.

No. You list your location as California. For ANYTHING at all smog related, only CARB approved parts are legal, period.

it will not pass the california smog well legally that it... with an ls vtec you cant swap heads from other motors like that i would just leave the motor stock and buy a smog legal turbo kit from like turbonetics or one of greddy street kits and the kit will allow you to pass smog because they are c.a.r.b. (california air resource board) certified but with the turbo kit you would have to possibly upgrade injectors and a couple of other things

Get it smogged and then install the new head. Problem solved.

yea like hushypushy said you can always go that route smog it then throw the vtec head on it lol just dont get pulled over othewise they will send you to state ref i had to have my last da crushed cuz i had a b17 gsr swap in it got pulled over they popped my hood you know the whole sha bang had to go to ref it wouldnt pass and i couldnt swap it back cuz i didnt have the motor so the court order was to have it crushed as a whole but its a good thing i got a homie that works at redline performance in rancho cuz he let me keep my motor and everything off of the car so if you want to do it without having to worry i would just get the street legal turbo kit run 91 octane get some bigger injecter s and tune the ecu to run the turbo and you will have nothing to worry about when you get pulled over...

Something does not seem right. How can you get your car crushed for not passing smog. With a swap that comes oem like that. Because i been in ur shoes with a ls da with a itr swap. But my intake was not carb'ed, went to the ref did not pass smog because of the ecu and I put on a stock intake. Got a new appointment came with the right ecu passed and even got a bar sticker for the new motor. I sold many ls integra's with gsr swaps and had to do brake and light and chp and never had a problem. There responce is that chassie code has both engine config's. Seems that you had a case against your county.

That's because a B17 doesn't belong in an LS, a B18A does. Your VTEC head wasn't the problem, the B17 block was.

I think the issue here is, once you get past smog (which should be easy as I mentioned, just smog the stock engine), what the cops will think. I'm inclined to believe that in an LS, if you have the proper CARB legal gear and matching VIN plates, the VTEC head will not be an issue.

btw, has anyone tried to pass CA smog with LS/VTEC? Why won't it pass specifically--visual, or emissions? (or both?)

If you like paying $200 every other year for smog then go ahead. For that kind of money you could have it retrofitted to CNG and never have to smog it again.

200 every other year is like 9 dollars a month. If you can't come up with that perhaps you shouldn't be "modding" your car.

I doubt that was the problem becasue is in 94 cerritos acura swapped a b17 motor into a friends 93ls teg when he blew the stock ls motor. He payed the diffrence for it. And its was costly.
The lsv will pass emissions if set up stock. but will not pass visual. I know for a fact because I done it twice. Once with a shaved vc and once just by going in. The smog guy just looked at it went about his way. Both were done at a arco pass or don't pay. I know 10 other people that have sneaked buy.

This will not fly for a ref thou

I am California born and raised.

This is my 1979 Triumph Spitfire. Got her when I was 15.

It will NOT pass smog. Carb was replaced with a Weber, Monza header, "smog" pump removed, cat replaced with larger unit, mallory dizzy, upped compression, and a "street performance" cam.

None of those modifications are legal.

Car tested 5 PPM HC. My 2000 GSR tested 49 PPM HC. The Spitfire gets 55 mpg highway without issue. The Integra can maybe pull 28 highway.

Twice the mileage, 1/10 the pollution. NOT SMOG LEGAL?!? Yup, thats the law, even if I think it is retarded.

Yeah, I paid $200 per smog to mechanics for years to overlook the visual. After asking too many mechanics to risk both their license and jail time (for passing an illegal car), I finally had enough and bought a 1975 Spitfire parts car. Now I have a smog exempt 1975 Spitfire and the 79 went to the junkyard.

This stuff is real simple. The law is easily available for those who can use Google. We can hate the laws all we want, but we still need to play by the rules, or pay for someone to break them, or pay the price for failing to (see back a few posts about a crushed car).
