Can a D16Y7 motor with a milled head to 11:1 CR and stronger rods rev safely to 8,000 RPM? I mean the stock redline is already 7,200 RPM redline. Possible? Thanks guys.
Have you done anything to the valve train? Upgraded it? Maybe some titanium retainers? I would recommend doing this before you rev it to 8k. I'm sure it will take it, but for how long??
Thanks, J
Thanks, J
sohc's can handle up to 8000 on the stock valvetrain. BUT its highly recommended if you are up there all the time, to upgrade the valvetrain.
the thing is there isnt a real wild, high lift cam for the SOHC's out there that will really require the upgraded valvetrain.
on the SOHCnonvtec, we have a crazy super custom cam that has a similarity to the civic Type R cam dyno graph. Check this out, power doesnt stop at 7800, it does start to flatten out but doesnt drop off at all. I wanted to take it past 8K but my upgraded valvetrain is 100,000+ miles old and I wasnt sure if it would hold.
oh and on the rods thing, ya sohc's have a really thin rod, but 150K on the motor with 100,000 of it used while I had it, i was at 8K all the time. no problems. maybe i was lucky, or we just underestimate the potential of the sohc.
I was trying out different custom grinds for the VTEC sohc, but we couldnt get them as wild as the sohcnonvtec.
for my racecar, we are still debating on using the sohcnonV vs vtec head w/o vtec.
