....of my drum brakes, i have read you can use two 8 mm bolts to help remove them. I did a search on this new VB software and it sucks. The car is 1994 accord with rear drum brakes, i just need to remove the drums or cover so i can replace this wheel cylinder.

 

Once you remove the wheel you will see that there are two threaded holes on the face of the drum. You can tighten a couple of bolts in them to separate the drum from the hub. It works really well, I did it not that long ago. I can't remember exactly what size they are but it is a very common Honda bolt size. The longer the better, if you haven't taken the drums off in a while there could be quite the lip on the drum.

 

That sounds about right, the head of the bolt should be a 12mm, screw one in some then the other, back and forth to attempt to pull the drum off as straight as possible, spray some break free around the center hub, the rust is probably doing most of the holding, wire brush it all prior to reassembly.

I have stripped these holes so please be careful, if it happens, it happens.

It is also possible that the shoes have eaten into the drum so you may be pulling on the shoes also, you may need to buy new brake shoe hardware, the pins that hold the shoes to the backing plate and the round retainers, maybe???

Is there not a slot in the back of the backing plate to adjust the shoes inward just in case, normally the hub corrosion is the main problem so have fun.

 

Sometimes a well placed whack with a good sized metric hammer will jar them loose as well. I mean well placed as in Not the Lug studs
Try the bolt trick first along with some penatrating oil, I normally don't advocate the use of force.

 

You are correct Duane. There is an adjusting star wheel in the rear drums. There is an access slot in the back of the backing plate to make adjustments to the shoes.

 

The bolt thread is the same as the exhaust header cover bolt. You can prob use that bolt to push the drum off the hub. If there's some rust, you might need to get a longer bolt. get 2x

Remember to let off your hand brake/emergency brake (some people just forget to do this)

 

a hammer will do just fine and 99% of the time you do NOT need to adjust the brakes down to simply take off the drum. u wack it with a hammer..... promise it will do nothing to the shape or performance of your drum. When you knock it loose turn the drum while you pull and it will come right off............... but yeah the bolts work too.

 

thanks or the response, i need to replace my wheel cylinder since my bleed bolt/vlave broke(NEVER BUY RUSSEL SPEED BLEEDERS).i'll try the hammer, the drum rotates even though it is rusty as sin.
