i just bought a 98 integra gsr with 96k miles when im driving normal everything fine so smoke or anything of the nature but when i open it up n crack tec i see nothing but black smoke in my rear view i've come to the conclusion that it could be a head gasket, bad rings or valve seals is there anything else to make my car smoke that bad?

almost every gsr ive ever seen puffs a nice cloud of black smoke when hitting vtec... we just rebuilt a gsr with brand new everything it has less than 2000 miles and it still puffs a cloud of black smoke when it first hits vtec!!

Most will have a puff of black smoke like that while stepping on it. However, your car shouldn't leave a big trail or anything. Black smoke is un burnt fuel. Maybe your timing is off a bit?

Has the motor had any kind of modifications done? Pull the plugs and see what they look like too.

maybe a rubber seal in the piston is letting oil pass through the combustion chamber and burning oil?

black smoke- running rich
white smoke- burning coolant
blue smoke- burning oil

your plugs will tell you eveything you need to know about how your engine running. if they are all a lightish brown color thats what you wanna see and means your running stoichometric fuel ratios. if there is build up or like specs of **** on them it means your burning oil, if theyre white your burning coolant. if they are dark brown or black your running rich.

your black puff of smoke sounds like you just need da good tune up. worst case scenario you could have a clog somewhere in the fuel lines causing your fuel pressure to be a little higher than normal which would make it run a little richer.

My car does not smoke, even when VTEC engages, and my engine has 272K on it (all original).

Perhaps you need to perform a leakdown test.

Well believe it, because it's the truth. It does not smoke, burn, or leak any oil aside from a SLIGHT oil pan gasket leak.

After 3000 miles, the oil on the dipstick is still at the full mark, without adding any at all between oil changes.
