Default Cam gear removal

Well I am about to replace my cam seal. How do i hold the cam while i break loose the bolt holding the cam gear onto the camshaft ? I know i could use an impact but i know that is not the proper way.

I've always left the timing belt on and the plugs in. engine compression has always been enough to hold it to break the bolt free. If the timing belt is off, then hold the cam gear still with a strap wrench.

With the valve cover off, put a small pry bar between the spokes of the cam gear, brace off the head.
