Default Question for those with Summer Tires

For those here who have Summer Tires how do they perform in the snow?

I currently have Bridgestone 400/AA/A. They have maybe 10k left on them.

I live in Chicago so we do get nasty snow and ice. Someone I know who has a Boxter rides on 160/AAA/AA and has no problems in the snow, obviously also has damn good traction control as well.

So how bad are summer tires in the snow on a Civic?

in many places, it's illegal to use summer tires in the winter...the rubber on the summer tires will also become rock hard in freezing temperatures

where i live, we have a pretty mild winter but i still wouldn't use summer tires in the winter especially if they only have 10% tread left...

I drove on summer tires (BFGs G-Force Sports) in the snow once and will never do it again. I live in Michigan where the weather can change every hour and we got a snow storm in the beginning of November. Taking off and turning weren't huge problems if you went slow enough but braking was a different story. The window you have between slowing down and lock up is VERY small. I don't have ABS but even if I did I highly doubt it would've helped at all.

Your tires might be better in the snow then mine. Or they could be worse. Take the risk if you want but to me it's a safety hazard.

you said you had about 10k left on the tires....that's very little tread for driving in the snow...

well my current tires are rated for 50K miles. I used up 40K so far. they still got tread left and i rotate them every 5k miles. they are no where near being bald yet, last time I got an oilchange 400 miles ago the dealership rated the front as good and rear as "wearing out" so the tires are still good.

as for the summer tires, I see a lot of cars with them I didnt think they where that bad. apparently they are

Do you like to drift around constantly? (aside from wreaking havock upon all in your path) then summer tires get a HUGE thumbs up.

If you wanna keep you car in only a few pieces this winter then get your steelies out an get those grippy **** snowtires mounted up!

(Although I refuse to buy snows this winter because im trading in the 7thGen in spring for a TSX or S2K heh heh)

Ok bro...Summer tires are made for the Summer...Bottom Line..I live in buffalo and I think prob get the most snow out of anyone here...I am sure you all heard about the October storm we had back in 2007...well ya..still had my rims on when it started snowing...and after about 2 hours I left work and there was about 4 inches of snow..I couldn't even move...I had to start out in 2nd gear just to get going...trust me you dont want to do it..not fun at all...So I went home and took them off..clearly...b/c I am not stupid...

aight. summer tires are very bad for winter. not getting snow tires for rotation, it snowes here like ones a week then dry for 2 weeks than snows again.

What are good All Season tires then? A direct link from Tirerack would be nice. I cant find anything below 400 treadwear for stock tire

I live in Pa, ran Bridgstone all seasons and Cooper all seasons for 2 winters, wrecked once and drove 15 under the speed limit the rest of the time. I went out and got Firestone Winterforce tires on some steelies for under $300 this year, runs like a champ
