Tail gate stay set (shocks) - Where to buy??
These are for the RSX and are the shocks that keep the hatch door (tailgate) up when you open it. The official part name is "stay set" and the part numbers are:
04741-S6M-010
04746-S6M-000

Acura charges $71 for each
AcuraOemParts.com charges a little more than $55 for each
I'm wondering if anyone has ever replaced these 2 shocks for less than these prices. AutoZone didn't have any in stock. But if they had had some, it would have been $20 for each.
Another question I have is, will the "hood" shocks for another acura or honda be the same size as the RSX tailgate shocks?

I went ahead and ordered a set from rockauto.com and they came in today.
So hopefully someone can answer this question......has anyone ever INSTALLED these before? If so, could you share the process?

they are easy to install. There is usually a metal U shaped tab covering the ball on the gas strut. Use a screw driver to pry that off and the strut will come too. I'll go look at my car tomorrow if you can't figure it out on your own, but they are simple.
to answer you other question the chances of a hood strut being the same is slim to none. They are all made based off weight and height and pressure. A hatch is a lot heavier than a hood on an RSX because of the glass.

Thanks for the response! I went to Acura and one of the service managers looked at it with me because he was telling me how easy they were to take off and install. It turns out that the RSX ones were different than what he was thinking of. He tried to use a small flathead to remove it from the ball joint, but to no avail.
I'll try it again when I go there next (today hopefully) and we will give it another go! I got my oil changed there on Saturday and I just noticed spots of oil on the ground where I park...so I guess that's another thing they can look at.

I figured it out with one of the service guys at Acura.
Basically, it is very easy. Unlike some of these kinds of shocks; on the RSX, you aren't able to pop it off of the ball joint. Instead, you must use a 10mm wrench to unscrew the ball joint at each end.
Total of 4 ball joints (each side)
10 mm wrench to unscrew them
Unscrew at the base of the ball joint (can't miss it)
The sucky part about this is that you cannot re-use the ball joints. They do not separate from the shock, unless you can force it out I guess. Make sure that when you order replacement shocks, that they send you (4) ball joint screws. The screw and the ball joint is one whole piece.
Acura would have charged $70 per shock. I ordered mine from Rockauto.com for a total of about $65. They only sent me (2) ball joint screws. This means I only installed 1 shock at Acura. Rockauto's customer service seems to be really good and they are going to send me (2) more ball joint screws at no charge. So make sure to get with them if you have to order these things so that they send you (4) and not (2).
Overview of the product:
Made in Taiwan....yeah, I know
Quality:
Considering that I needed to replace both shocks, just one of these replacements holds up the hatch perfectly. I don't know if that's good or bad lol. We'll see when I get the other one on there if it is too strong of a shock. T
The structure and build seems to be great from what I can see. The ball joint screws are gold in color, instead of the black OEM pieces (I like the gold better).

I just ordered a set from Rock Auto.... they would not send me the extra ball joints.
They did provide me a FedEx return number so the lifts are going back at their cost.
Time to try and find them somewhere else. Acura is just too expensive for me.

Oh welll... life will go on....
Tried to get the dang ball joints... 10-12mm i forget which.... loose.... must be some soft metal.... they all started rounding.
Guess I will just have to put up with the hatch trying to do brain damage to me when there is some snow on it!!!

Yeah, they didn't send me 2 of the ball joints I needed as well. Apparently the whole set comes with 2 total ball joints. They told me if I could find the ball joint somewhere or the dealership, they would reimburse me for the charge.
