Good luck man, I recently traded my ef and I really miss these cars... Eg's are cool but they are not as classic the ef's are!
Cheapest way to get vtec in there is a motor swap. You can pick up a JDM D15B single cam motor from Japan for about $400-500 bucks and you are going to need a new transmission (that 4speed/tall gearing will not work) pick up a cable si transmission out of an si hatchback, this short gear ratio will be great for acceleration and it is a 5 speed.
You are going to need new axles (if applicable)
If your hatch is a STD (Standard) DX, you are going to have to perform a DPFI to MPFI conversion. This makes your current dual point fuel injection and takes it to a multi point fuel injection system. By performing this = MORE HP. You will noticeably feel the difference in power. To accomidate the wiring system, you are going to need a OBD-0 (what your car currently has) to OBD-1 conversion/jumper harness. This is important if you plan to run an ECU for VTEC. Pick up a P28 ECU that you will find in a 92-95 Si hatchback or EX coupe.

So for about a grand in parts you will be able to get your car running great, and hear that sohc vtec crank. PM me if you have any more questions. Also, do your research. I have recently stopped posting new threads, and searched for info and learned a lot of nice stuff.

Good luck

Don't put eBay springs on, especially on stock shocks. Get a decent set of springs and shocks. You can get Ground Controls + Koni Yellows/Tokico Illuminas for about $350 and that's as good as you need unless you are doing some serious track action.

Just leave the whole car stock and race autocross. It keeps you in the stock class and these cars kick butt. Then you don't have to explain to everyone why you dropped 10 grand in a car thats worth 2. But a lot of companies make full coilovers and I would recommend some if you keep the car for a while. Congrats on the new ef.

yea working on efs aint cheap man, everyone ive ever owned ive had bad ***** joints etc. If your looking to motor swap a zc is a easy swap to do, uses your stock mounts. I went with b series, had a b20 vtec, a gsr, and a b16. Always went with doing the jdm front conversion with carbon sir hood ).

you could build add a d series vtec head and build a mini me and not swap the motor at all but you would still need a new tranny

That is a very good price. I bought my Ground Control/Tokico Illuminas for $325 from a local seller on HT.

It's VTEC, not vtech.

I would suggest freshening up your motor or swapping in another one before you do anything else. You could also keep your motor and do a MPFI swap and add a Si trans to it, that will make it a lot quicker than it currently is.

VTEC is pretty overrated in my opinion on a stock engine.

if you want some good suspension. go with the skunk2 pro series full coilovers. They run about 500 bucks brand new, and theyre pretty good. I had them on my old ef, and no complaints. Besides 2 people messing up the installation and not knowing about preload.
