Icon6 Need to narrow down what's up with the clutch.

My car is my02 and has just rolled 85000 miles. The clutch has never been changed and I figured its on the way out. It doesn't slip yet but 2 weeks ago the catch point became really high. And as of today the catch point is really LOW. I feel like I'm driving a stage clutch. I only have to make the pedal travel about 5% from the floor and the clutch is engaged. The gears are very hard to put in, and when they do go in it feels very notchy.

What could be the possible problem? I searched and found some info and am maybe thinking throw out bearing? The slave cylinder is fine and doesn't leak.

I'm going to replace the clutch anyway, but just wanted to figure out if I should check other things as well.

Thanks for the time guys!

Can't tell you what could be the problem. Have you checked the 'clutch fluid'? However, if you're putting in a new clutch, it should solve the problem. You'll be changing the throw out bearing and the pressure plate as it is.

alright. I'm just going to change out the clutch and lets see if that works itself out.

I just figured the pressure plate is going bad and the clutch doesn't disengage, hence the pedal being down there.

Sounds like a clutch issue to me. Good luck and remember the S2K uses a pull style clutch. The release bearing pulls from the inside of the presure plate instead of pushing on the fingers.

before you go wasting money on a new clutch check your fluid, bleeb the clutch system and check both master and slave cylinders or leaks.

I checked for leaks and haven't found any. I will bleed the system and see if that helps. But I'm purchasing a new clutch either way because it getting close to that time where I might as well change it before it starts slipping.

my 300zx did that when the clutch was going.

i fruitlessly spent HOURS trying to adjust my pedal, looking for leaks, etc.

finally, replaced the clutch. problems gone.

Try bleeding your system before you spend all that time replacing the clutch.

have you ever changed the transmission fluid in the car either? i can't see how air would have got in the clutch line if he never messed with it in the first place. however bleeding the line is pretty much freeso it wouldnt hurt to try, just don't be surprised when the problem is still there when you are done bleeding it out.

Good idea, it's not hard. I recommend replacing the slave cylinder as a precaution: there might not be a visible leak, but the boot might be filled with fluid. It's cheap and easy, might as well do it since it might save you a clutch job.

I replaced the tranny fluid about 4 months ago but I'm doing it again with this clutch job. Better to change it out. The slave cylinder I will check out as well. My friend has a spare one from his wrecked 2004 s2000. Will that fit on my car? Gosh it's going to be a pain doing the clutch change though lol

No, don't use an AP2 slave cylinder on an AP1. Most AP2 guys switch to AP1 slaves. The AP2 releases slower for smoother shifts. Which = shorter clutch life, and less power to the wheels

Let me know if you want that clutch, I replied to your PM.

take the guts out of the AP2 slave cylinder, thats the part that leaks.. the piston + rubber seals on it. just swap that into the AP1 slave and re-install the AP1 slave. im judging from the honda slaves/masters ive seen that they should be the same size. (the piston inside the slave)

the AP2 slave cylinders have a delay valve in them and that's what gives them the delay in engauging the clutch, otherwise AP1 and AP2 slave cylinders are identical. you can take the little metal screen out of the AP2 slave cylinder that makes the engaugement slow and it'll act like the AP1 and it's a free mod Honda put this in on the AP2's to help protect the drivetrain.

like it's been said already try bleeding the clutch fluid first, more than likely that's the problem. crap can get in there and contaminate the fluid and give a sloppy pedal feel just like brake fluid. the best thing is to gravity bleed the slave cylinder while you're buddy keeps topping off the resivoir. once the fluid coming out of the cylinder is as clean as the fluid going in then you're all set

Try changing the fluid. If that does not help, your trans is shot.
