Default shifter moves

hey my friend has a bone stock 97 dx coupe. the issue is the shifter moves around freely from side to side 4" or so at all times while in gear or out of gear. he has full use of all gears and no issues but its just irritating and has been like this for quite awhile but wants to get it fixed.i just switched out the shifter bushings w urathane bushings which seemed to help slightly but not much at all... anyone have any ideas?

try replacing the bushings on the shift linkage or compleatly replacing the shift linkage with something nicer like the hassport shift linkage you can find it at full-race.com

it says in the original post that the bushing have been replaced... and getting "nicer" linkage like hasport linkage is not what is going to fix the problem

Does shifter moove when accelerating/decelerating? If so, check the torque mounts on both sides. Also look at all the engine mounts, esp the soda can mount.

there's a plastic piece that looks like it has teeth that sits right above the ball on the shifter its self , right below the dust sheilds, its most likely not there if its got that much move to it, should help it stay in place, napa dosn't cary it so you gotta go to honda dealership and have them order it, i just payed 15 bucks and ask them to print you out a picture of the shifter setup

no its not mount related... its moved when the car is off when its idling when its driving whatever... its not vibration/engine movement related its just that something is allowing it to move overly freely at all tiems but its still has gears...

this is probably a little off topic but does it matter if u use the factory washer(rubbery) or just a regular washer that fits on the transmission end of the shift linkage?

this is probably the solution. i bought the bitch pin but im too lazy to install it since i forgot about it during my a/t to m/t swap. my car does the same thing--the shift lever moves left to right in gear like it's in neutral right?? get this part from oem honda and it should be fine. it's cheap as hell and worth trying instead of "buying a new shift linkage."

The problem is most likely you need a new spring pin. I had the exact same problem with my B18 eg and I replaced the spring pin (from any b,d-series shift linkage) and now its perfect. I got mine for 1.50 from a friend at the local honda dealership. I think I have a part number layin around if you want it, PM me if you do.

The b-series part # is 90751s04000 and I thin it'll work for d-series as well. Its number 022 on the pics.

also check the play on bolt 24 on that diagram. make sure there's next to no slack. you need a bit or you cant move the shifter freely, get under the car tighten it up, and have your buddy try the shifter. then loosen the bolt/nut to the point where it moves freely keep trying to get the proper movement, it's the play in rather the 2 places, where the #24 bolt goes or #22 pin
