Default question about light flywheel

ok so im thinking its about time to get a new clutch in my dc5 i was thinking about doing a lighten flywheel, the only thing is that i did one in my integra ls with a built head. I think it hurt me more them helped me. So i was wondering who is running a lighten flywheel and does it help you and how many pounds is the stock flywheel?

How did it hurt you? The only way it could is if you're a drag racer. Otherwise, less weight on the drivetrain is never a bad thing.

All a flywheel (basically) does is store kinetic energy. The heavier it is the more it stores. But the heavier it is the more (power) it takes to build it up.

How would it hurt drag racers?

I have heard mixed results on lightweight flywheels. Some say it takes a little getting used to cause the revs drop quicker. I have driven cars with both. I know I want to get the Type R flywheel eventually.

I think they are cool. My friend has a 94 Mazda MX3 and he swapped out the 1.8L V6 for a 2.5V6 KLZE from Japan. It has a lightweight flywheel. It revs like a sport bike all the way to 8000 RPMs. Its pretty sick hearing a V6 rev that high and start shooting fireballs (he runs pretty high fuel pressure). Haha.

Only time I hear people complain about lightened flywheels are when they are boosting serious HP because of idle and launch. Other than that. GO FOR IT! They are fun and great for rev matching.

This affects any car regardless if its a drag car. I think its more important for a daily driver because you shift slower. 8 or 9lbs flywheel and you go to shift and you are at idle. Also sucks to get going, especially with the ac on.

I would never get a lightened flywheel for a DD.

Thats why you stick with the street light which is around 10-11lbs. Around the same as a Type-R stock flywheel. I have no problem DD and I run a 6puck Stage 4 competition clutch on my DD. Grab and go

hmm...i've recently pciked up an ACT sport FW from one of the techs at my dealership...i've also heard about kinetic energy/inertia issues with starting and climbing hills, etc. i was just going to hold on to it until i upgrade my clutch...seems like the best idea considering i'm not running much more HP/TQ over stock '04 type-s motor and it is my DD...comments anyone?

i have a 9 lb on my dd, it has never made a difference on my driving, if you know how to drive a clutch properly then u can drive a car with a lighten flywheel all day up and down hills and not have a thing to worry about, it is a minimal mod at best, quit fretting over it like its a turbo kit or something

Thank you hawaiiancb74 I agree completely. It's just a flywheel. I love it.

I would wait, you don't want to pull the tranny twice. It's a lot of work lol

True its just a flywheel, you will get a whole 2hp. Worth it for making your DD a pain in the ***, no.

I have been driving my car around for a week now and it's seriously amazing. I have no problems at all. But I've done it with every honda I've owned.

It all depends on how you feel... I had a 7 pound flywheel with a stage 3 clutch on my B18C5 and I loved... it was fun... but my dad always had a hard time with it lol

well it drops your revs very fast so if you are slow at shifting it will make it very unpleasant to dd...

more like 0 hp. a flywheel doesn't increase your engine power.

i have a exedy 9.8 lb flywheel on my gsr and i probably won't get such a light flywheel for my si. it's fun at first but gets annoying for dding after a while, as you have to shift super fast during regular driving or the rpm will be at idle. also, it seems like i have to give it more gas when starting off.

I forgot where I was reading it... I wanna say sport compact car but they claimed that a lightweight flywheel because of less rotating mass will equal quicker acceleration similar to gutting an interior... Sound like it could be true?

Yes the revs will go up quicker and you will get a bit better acceleration but you have to keep in mind that if the revs go up quicker they will also fall as quickly! So you would need to shift a little quicker... it demands just a little more work and getting use too... nothing hard!
