Project *Did I Just Get Wasted By A EF Sedan? NAAH*
I looked for awhile for the perfect sedan and i found one in st. louis that was an EX and the guy wanted $800 for it. I drove up from springfield with the money and a car dolly(the guy said the car ran good and had a primer hood only. I get up to look at the car and the hood and fender are primer as well as the trim piece between the headlights, the inside smells like mold, and mold is everywhere in the interior, the speedo doesn't work and there's no radio in it. I told the guy i'd give him $200 for it the way it sat and he took it. I took the car back to springfield with a gian smile on my face and a new care richer.
My main goal was to get this car into the status of "Hey have you seen that boosted old school sedan civic running around" and i'll let you see my progression.
This is the day after i brought it home

Sweet tint huh!

The first thing i did was to strip all the interior out of the car including the carpet and trunk carpet. I used a power washer with a bleach mixture to kill the carpet through a pressure washer as well as a scrub brush to clean the seats(luckily the seats didn't have mold on them) (unfortunately i didn't take pics of this)
Next was to lower the car. My friend has a set of coil overs he wasn't using so he gave them to me. So on about day 4 of owning the car i changed it's stance

I did also put adjustable upper lower control arms on the front as wells as a SPC rear camber kit(can't find the pics right now)
This car I'm planning on keeping it mostly all go minimal show but there was a local 417racing.com meet to attend so i had to do something to the car to make it just a little more appealing.
So i painted the 1980 hammers black

Since the car was an EX it already had the bigger front brakes but i felt i had to address the rear drums. I found a rear disk swap from a 90 gsr in a local junk yard for $100 so i snatched it up. I think it make a huge difference and i would recommend to anyone with drums on the rear(oh yea i snagged the rear sway bar as well. I'll mount that later)

By this point I've owned the car about 2-2 1/2 months and i decided the stock D16a6 just wasn't cutting it. I was searching on kcsr.org and there was a guy selling a turbo kit minus downpipe and wastegate for $300. So i'm off driving across missori for this car again.

Having the kit is nice but i's not doing any good without a wastegate or a downpipe. So i'm off hunting again! I found a guy in St. Louis with a brand new 40mm jgs wastegate off craigslist. I called him up offered him $100 for it and he shipped the freaking thing before i even sent the money.(that guy is cool! A little nuts but cool by me)

The downpipe i actually got off ebay for like $100 shipped i think It's a 3in mandrel bent stainless piece that is pretty nice. The only thing i didn't like is that it didn't have a o2 bung welded into it.(i'll have to round up a pic of that)
Before i put the turbo on there was a couple weeks lapse of time and i got tired of looking at the sad stock paint flaking valve cover so I painted it with some crinkle paint.

Finally time for the turbo to go on
(initial parts layout)

I had DIYMIKE(here is his build thread https://honda-tech.com/forums/appearance-build-threads-122/diymike-ef-build-here-my-canvas-let-me-paint-you-picture-1969355/) chip my pm6 ecu with Xenocrom kit with a zif socket and a removable chip. Since i didn't have a tuner yet i had xenocrom put a base tune on it for my setup. Also since I had to have the oil pan off I replaced the rod and main bearings.

And the fun begins!
First things first since you can't put the power to the ground without a descent clutch i retired the slipping stocker with a XTD Stage 4 6 puck unsprung clutch

Downpipe on(o2 bung not welded yet

Making progres(this part was slow since between taking care of my 3 kids and picking up my girfriend from from work since now we only have 1 car I was only left with about an hour of time a day to work on the car)

These pics show where i had my first issue. Since I opted to have the exhaust side of the turbo exit the passenger side the turbo stuck out too far to use the full size radiator. I'll address this issue later.

At this point i did install a eg half size radiator. I ended up cutting the front cross member to allow the radiator look like it was supposed to be there. I couldn't do the gangster lean method hear because the radiator would hit the downpipe

Kinda gets overwhelming sometimes

Well worth the wait

I drove the car around for about 3 weeks before taking it to the local track. My best time as of this point is a 13.9 at 99mph with 2.2 60ft's on only 7.8lbs of boost and 14in all season tires. I drove the car for at least 30 passes and about a 2months of driving daily and on cruises and meets and then the #3 rod bearing spun on me. I had a friend that had a d15b2 that he got in a car that was cut in half with a d16a6 intake on it. He said the guy he got the motor car from said the motor ran good about 3 months ago and just stopped and he don't know why. My friend had the motor for about 6 months. I picked it up from him for $50. It came with plugs new plug wires d16a6 intake manifold and alternator. I ordered new main bearings, rod bearings, oil pan gasket, piston rings and head gasket.
Since i got this motor i will build this as a winter motor untill I build my d16a6 into a vitara motor over the winter
I take it apart on Thanksgiving to find the motor was a complete fresh rebuild(you can still see the hone marks). The guy who put the motor together must have been infatuated with RTV that stuff was everywhere. I did replace the main and rod bearings anyways.

New stuff

Disassembly time

cylinder #1 (You can still see the hone marks

cylinder #2

cylinder #3 (ouch this is from a previous accident)

cylinder #4

this may be a little problem

Bring on the RTV( There is a brand new oil pan gasket in there somewhere)

Not good

Going back together

I left the head off untill i can replace the valve seals. Stay tuned
Also these came out of the head. A nice bonus these are worth what i paid for the motor almost.

Sorry it's been so long since i've updated but being that i live in missouri and don't have a garage to work on the car the cold has kinda slowed me. Although thanks to my parents christmas present i now have an engine hoist and leveler and did get the engine in today. Enough bs and now for the pics
d16a6 comming out

starting where i left off i cleaned and painted the block

as the same for the valve cover
bare aluminum

now white

now new ford gray(to keep the writing on the leters of the valve cover i put grease on the just machined part. Works great. Just a tip)

Since i was cleaning and painting everything i thought why not have a dump tube made as well. Since before it was just dumping into the engine bay(in front of the turbo inlet to be more specific). WRONG all the local shops wanted $80+ to make a mild steel one. I said F it and since i have acquired a welder recently i gave it a shot.
I started with about 18in of straight 1 3/8 muffler pipe i had laying around and some 3/8in thick steel
flange part 1 (i know it kinda looks knarley but it gets better)

flange part 2 ( yea i know it's upside down)

dump tube put together.(I didn't have a pipe bender so i used the good ol' cut and weld technique)

I don't think it turned out that bad
couple random pics

oh yea i got a new turbo as well
old setup garret 42/48(worked well i might add)

new turbo(CDM to4e 50 trim)

Not pictured but trust me they're there! I don't have pics of these because i just got them today and put them in are a set of evo 8 injectors to compensate for the bigger turbo(not a bad deal on these as well. I got them from a guy at work for $45)
engine going in(the other day but it i had troubles with the tranny so i took it out as well and put it all in as one today)

I know i still have a ching chong manifold on there but don't worry here in the next couple weeks i will be getting one of these 2 made by a local speed shop owner(whichever one i get will be t3 flanged with an external tial 38mm flange

or

I also got slicks for this season 22x8x15 but no pics yet just picked them up a couple days ago for $45(should last me this season)
check back later

WOOT WOOT! I got it running tonight. I didn't drive it but i did start it and there were no cel's like there was before. I felt like a fool for a bit because the fuel pump wasn't priming and i checked everything but the obvious(the friggen ground on the thermostat housing) Anyways i'll post video up tomorrow. The clearence between the turbo and the intercooler is so tight that the intake side of the turbo is about 1/16in away from the intercooler. Good thing when the motor starts to pic up power it'll pull it away from the ic. I'll post pics when i post the video.
What ^^he said...
NICE BUILD THOUGH BRO!!! Same color EX as mine. Mine was in not so great condition too, but it was well worth the price that I paid.

Glad to see another sedan being built!
