Tall ratios+underpowered engine... How fast would you expect it to be?

Yeah you won't have any torque to pass on 5th gear, but for it to bog down...interesting. Just try downshifting to get back up to speed and you'll be alright.

****EDIT****
Just re-read your post, if you're bogging down going 50mph in 5th gear there's something wrong. Both of my CRX HF's don't do that...they run fine and only bog down when you're going slow in a higher gear.

What year is it? I just thought of something. maybe your brakes are dragging. or you could be running on three cylinders or something Worst I think, is a bad wheel bearing or something, something expensive. Do you know if the motor is in good condition or how old it is. You know the hf had the lowest power and most economic transmission, so it's not made to get up 'n go =]

yea bud, a stock hf has 62HP/83 TQ plus a very long geared transmission. it was made strickly for fuel economy which means not fast at all.

Oh, but you said it's bogging, like when your in 4th gear and going 10 mph. If it's that, and you have no major issues like brakes dragging, tranny problem, suspension problem, or horrible compression. I'd recommend a good tune up. That's good for like 15 hp... On the butt dyno =]

Throw some heet and a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer and injector cleaner too

LOL i remember when i was rolling like this.
you should check your timing.
i remember i couldnt get it to go over 60mph.
turns out that the previous owner had retarded the
timing all the way out.
so i could even chrip the wheels or anything.
lol
check it couldnt hurt only like 2 seconds

Line the marking up with the notch on the plastic timing belt cover.

The crank pulley has a painted line at top dead center, loosen your timing belt and put that at top, then the cam sprocket has a top line and two side marks. You align the side marks with the head and the top goes up. Then tighten your belt and adjust your dizzy cap to the timing also. You can buy a timing light to check your timing

i think you're expecting too much from your car. like i said the transmissions are geared really long, so on the highway in 5th gear, if you don't downshift, you're not gonna go anywhere. that's just the way it is in these cars. they weren't meant for speed or acceleration.

as far as the bogging is concerned. try a few of the things the others have suggested such as the tune-up and maybe timing. i don't think too many people will mess with the timing on a stock hf but you never know, it could be off.

but just a warning, even after you do that, don't expect to be able to accelerate quickly with out down shifting into a lower gear and getting your rpms up. and even after that you still won't accelerate that quickly because of the transmission and lack of power.

I think 135 is normal, not sure, If you change you're head gasket, there's a whole bunch of stuff you should do wile your in their. Grab a valve cover gasket set. I read that buying one will increase your compression.
Oil on the transmission, wipe it down real good and drive it a little bit, but not faster than 20 mph so the wind doesn't push the oil, then look for where exactly it's coming from, tell us and we can help where it's coming from k

Yah man, those compression numbers aren't so great at all.

You should try a full leak down test if you have the means.

As for the gearing, I rock my HF daily, and 40mph in 5th gear will have terrible acceleration, but you definitely should not be bogging.

As for the get up and go factor, they are plenty acceptable to drive on the highway, you just have to rev a little bit.

The transmissions are actually pretty amusing.

If your willing to go to redline, like... 4800-5000rpms in an HF, I personally have caught 70mph in second gear. (I know that was stupid to do that to my baby, shoot me.)

So in a real world scenario, come out of second at like 40mph you should be around 3000rpms which isn't bad at all. Then you can just ride third until you get comfortable with the flow of the traffic.

Dude my stock HF motor did 40MPH in 3rd gear.
Fifth gear has no pull, stay in 4th if you wanna pass. Is the car still hesitating?

Also oil leaking on the tranny side of the head is not a headgasket. Its probably your Dizzy seal! Dribbling down.

You know on Hondas, changing a motor is easier than a headgasket sometimes, and cheaper. A sohc zc with tranny would be a complete bolt on, ad if you have the 88 hf, the lightest, It will probably be faster than an si

dark black? Not sure, milky is bad, means you are getting coolant in your oil

Oh so it burns oil, that's probably why you have such bad power. you might need a ring job.
maybe the oil is old, because it burns it, the guy probably just mixes a slew of different ones. Give it an oil change and add some lucas oil stabilizer to stop burning.
