1988 Honda Accord DX (Winter Gas Mileage)
Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to why my Honda gets such horrible gas mileage in the winter. With this car, I get over 40mpg highway in the summer, and 25-30mpg city. I checked after my last fillup and was getting 16mpg. This is a small, 4-banger carb Honda. Wtf.
It runs really rough when it is cold outside, until it fully warms up. It probably doesn't help that my drive is only 3 miles to work so most of the time that it is driven, it really doesn't have time to fully warm up. It usually will idle high before warming up but hasn't been doing that so much since I just replaced the thermostat.
I just wonder if something needs tuned up or worked on or something because 16mpg doesn't sound right! I love my old Honda and have recently put in a drivers side half shaft, battery and alternator (alternator is in a terrible, terrible spot btw) and I just wish it ran smoother while warming up and was more efficient like I know it can be. Thanks for any input everyone.

carbs aren't as easy to be "year round" as FI. but i'm not sure with hondas. probably has a lot to do with your short commute, and winter gas. generally the drop isn't horrible when you are driving in the winter, about 3mpg or so. you may just have to get the car "tuned" for the winter months..
