Hi,

Looking for help in troubleshooting the cooling circuit. The fan never turns on. Although my son says he shorted out the connector over the thermostat and it turned on. When he tried to show me what he did, it never turned on though.

What are the steps to determine if it is the fan, relay, wire, connector, etc.? Is there a diagram that shows the components involved?

Check the relays under the hood, then wire the fan directly to the battery and turn the car on the fan should run the entire time the car is on. If the relays are good and the fan works when wired to the battery, I think it should be the fan switch.

Is the thermostat ok?

The thermostat has been replaced a couple of times.
Where are the relays and fan switch located at?

 

fan switch should be a green plug around the thermostat

 

and fan relays should be very close to the fan

 

So, I retried shorting out the connector on top of the thermostat and with the ignition on, the fan does work.

Does that completly point to the fan switch? Is this the metal part that looks to be part of the housing? When this is removed will fluid come out? Is this switch readily available at typical parts stores?

One more question, should the fan work without the key being on or did this model fan always turn off when the key was off?

yes it is the fan switch, and yes the part is readily available, and yes is fluid will come out, and yes there is no power to the fan relay when the key is off so it should turn off when the key is off.
