Post 02 Accord transmission swap

02 Accord with transmission problems. D-4 blinks and throws 2 codes for shift modules. After searching the threads and internet, I have learned I am pretty much screwed. (98 - 03 transmission problems) I can turn a wrench; however I am not tech savvy enough to attempt any transmission work. I ask for simple opinions only based on past experiences. Installed prices: $2400 for new Honda w/ 3y-36k warranty or $1800 rebuild w/ 12mo - 12k warranty. Neither warranty includes labor. 103,000 on car w/ plans to keep it for at least 60,000 more. Car is a daily driver and mod free.

Thanks for the thoughts.

get a used tranny for 200-300$ that someone pulled for a 5spd swap, install it yourself, or pay a shop 275-500 just to swap trannys

I have one with 95k miles. Ran perfect when I did the swap. Let me know if you're interested.

Burgess, just out of curiosity, can you tell us what maintenance was done on the toasted transmission (ex. fluid change intervals, type of fluid used, 4 cyl or 6)?

I have 58k on my 02, and I drained the fluid at 45k and again just recently. I plan on doing it every year, to prolong the life on the tranny and not beating of the car (granny driving).

Also, were those quotes from a Honda Dealer? You might try to work with your local dealer and with Honda to see if they will honor the extended warranty, since you are only over by 3k miles. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.

I bought the car with 60k and changed fluid once when I got it. I do drive it like a granny. I am not sure if I would trust a used tranny since mine went out with only 103k. The price was a local dealer who specializes on Hondas. I will try to call Honda on monday.

I,ll get the specific codes on Monday. The mechanic said it was two codes for the shift solenoids.

Default 80k, tranny fluid never changed, should I?

Hey,

Just bought a 02 Accord with 80k. I want to change the tranny fluid, which the previous owners dont know if it was changed or not, but I have heard buzz that its not a good idea after a certain point (ex70k) as it could cause more damage than good. Any truth to this or should i change it immediately?

Thanks,
I-Man

do not buy anything other than a honda reman unit. there have been several SIGNIFICANT updates since that car was built and you do NOT WANT to put in a used or rebuilt trans that came from anyone else besides Honda.......

I burned through my first 2 trannies under warranty at under 50k. First one was beat on, second was babied. It was replaced with a reman unit at the dealer and ran flawlessly for another 20k til I swapped it for the 5spd. Its up for sale btw
Best preventitive maintainence you can do is use only Honda ATF on any tranny you replace yours with.

no, the casings were redesigned for better oil flow to correct the 2nd gear lubrication problem along with the 2nd gear clutch pack lubrication problem and the addition of an external filter and removal of the internal one.
