Usually I use an impact gun. you need a really big breaker bar and something to keep the wheel from turning if you don't have air tools.

it's to prevent it from backing off on it's own.

yes it is like that to lock it, get a nice long pipe and it should come off.

The smashed part, usually goes w/ the axle notch so that it does not back off. It will usually come off with air tools, but you can get it off w/ a breaker bar and someone holding the brakes.

32mm socket with a breaker bar. Wrap a towl around the part of the bar thats near the car so you dont accidently scrape your car when your stepping on/using the breaker bar...
Good luck, I have to replace an axle either tomorrow or friday...

get a breaker bar, then go to like lowes or home depot and buy a 6 foot lead pipe to put on the end of the breaker bar and thats all leverage you should need.....but one time even that wasnt enough for me!!! So I drove to my local garage and had them with thier power tools losen the axle nuts so I could get them off at my house!!

Damn, i just use a 3 ft pipe and a craftsman wrench..It takes a lil muscle, but it will pop off. Maybe try some lubricant like PB Blaster

This is what I use: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=30396

They also sell a longer one: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=30395

The nice thing about these bars (other than being a Snap-on clone) is they use a regular screw in the swivel instead of a pin, so they're easier to replace when you break them...

The longer one works better, but it won't fit in my rollaway tool chest...

Autozone also carries a nice rent-to-own breaker bar - the ones they keep behind the counter, in a plain white box - not the ones they sell out on the shelf.

Actually, AZ 'rental' tools are pretty nice! And, since they charge you full price for the deposit, they don't care if you bring them back or not. LoL! They just don't adversise that fact. They'd rather sell you the lesser-quality, higher-priced, off-the-shelf tools!

Anyway, a breaker bar is all I ever use to bust axle nuts...

BTW, 32mm sockets are kinda hard to find. A 1 1/4-inch socket is exactly the size, so either one will do the job!

These axle nuts don't always come off easily, even with a 6 foot pipe on a breaker bar. I had a hell of a time getting one loose on my '96 with original axles, but it took almost 13 years to get that siezed.

Lead pipe huh? Might as well suggest a 6 foot PVC pipe.

I couldn't get mine off worth of ****. Took a big breaker bar, wheel locked, and an extra metal pipe on the end of the breaker bar for more leverage. What felt like a couple of torn muscles later it was off. Major pain in the *** without an impact wrench.

That's why I did it the way I did the next time, took it down to my friend's shop and broke it loose, then just tightened it a bit - it paid off in the end, I only live 5 minutes from his shop so I went there, then came back, and did it.

They are? Every chain auto parts store has them on their tool aisles. Usually everything from a 32-36mm.
