Default upgrading my 88 crx si?

i'm brand new to this forum and to the honda game. i know tons about older chevy v8 cars and have loved crx's for a long time and finally decided to get another one. my first one i had 4 years ago when i was 17, long story short, the cold air shorted out the battery and the whole thing went boom! lol. luckily i wasn't in the car.

anyways, i have a 88 crx si. i've been doing tons and tons of research about everything to do with the car. as of now, i'm doing a super low budget build where i'm getting everything from ebay and parts around town. i've already done a full tune up including new ngk plugs, ngk wires, soon to do a msd external coil upgrade, and i've installed ebay cold air intake, headers, exhaust, and test pipe. i've also installed new axles and a few other non-performance mods.

finished with the brief history, what i'm really asking about now is a mini me swap. i want to stick with the d16 for now and go vtec and build and little bit before i move into anything dohc. i've read tons of info and have now settled on the d16y8 head swap. i'm just confused about what additional parts i'll need, like head gasket, timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, and anything else that goes along with the head swap. my buddy said you guys would be the best to ask, so there it is.

i was also wondering what other mods i should do to the upper end before or while i do the mini me swap. i've been told that my a6 intake is better for high rpm rather than swapping over to a z6 or y8 manifold. what about a direct bolt on throttle body without the need for modifying anything at all? and injectors? fuel rail? fuel pressure regulator? anything else i'll be needing?

i just want to say thanks in advance for any help i'll be getting and just wanted to say that i'll be looking forward to learning from everybody here and eventually helping out in any way i can. thanks a lot everybody

shorter runners and better plenum. I used to run a6/z6 mini me. it is a fun little combo the y8 intake is the best factory d series mani. I also bolted on a b18a1 tb it is bigger and port matched it. You are on the right track with head gasket, TB, and WP. I would highly highly recomend doing an obd1 conversion it is really easy. I just saw a guy on here selling a socketed p28 for like 75 bucks all you need is that, a harness, a 4 wire O2, and an obd1 dizzy with a dizzy plug.

Don't forget about your suspension.

not that it's that big of an expense or anything but I would reccomend against do an MSD external coil. there is really no need for it. the factory honda ignition system is more than capable of handling what you're going to be doing and can handle up to quite a few hundred HP. If you want to do it, then by all means go ahead, but there will be no difference and you could put the money to better use.

i read that the y8 manifold is better for lower rpm while the a6 manifold is better for higher rpm. exactly what parts do i need for the y8 head swap? Thanks

you use the y8 head gastket but i believe all the other thing you mentioned is from the a6. don't know about the intake manifold question though.
