prelude tranny concern, thinking of buying
I'm thinking of buying a 2000 prelude, it has an auto tranny. But everyone says they crap out really quick, any specific reasons why and is there anyway to get a good auto tranny? I know this is unrelated, but why are the 5th gen preludes so pricy? I went to look at a 2001 prelude last year(auto tranny with 70k miles) and they wanted $15k for it?! I was like wtf?! I mean, its nice but its been around for a while, I just don't get it. The one Im looking at is stock and the dealer is asking 12k. Anyhow, thats why I'm looking to ask prelude owners.
1. Honda autos suck. Autos are for girls, anyway. Get a 5spd.
2. Don't buy from dealerships, they always have at least a 50% markup. Purchase from a private seller from eBay or AutoTrader or Craigslist. A stock 2001 Prelude with 70k miles should run you around $8-9k, dependent on condition.

Keep looking. Mine is tiptronic auto, works fine. 5spd. would be my 1st choice but my girl drives it time to time. $15K is retarded unless it's been in a heated garage and has like 20K on it. I got mine for $6500 with 88K on it, immaculate body and interior (leather).
Mine has 95K on it now. You got $8K I'll have it delivered to you, lol. Seriously though, consider "why" you are buying it. Don't get me wrong, the Prelude is fun to drive but it's far from a sports car.

I totally agree with both comments. The toyota dealership said it was a rare car and it was show quality clean, etc. But its still a 2001 model! Its kind of dated. They wanted $12k for it.But no. Im looking at another one for around $9k with 80k miles, automatic. That price seems reasonable and its at a small dealership.
I dont really care for the looks of the newer hondas. Im looking to buy on credit. My fiance is willing to cosign and she has a credit score around 750 I think. So Im just wondering how much my payments would be for a 8 or 9k prelude. Im still trying to justify buying it, so we'll see what happens. The car Im driving now is a 88 civic hatch with d15b swap. I've just always liked the 5th gen prelude, so if the price is right and it works out I want one.

Automatic honda's suck, and the 5g Prelude auto is the worst of all of them. It will fail. Some owners go through more than one replacement. Buy a manual Prelude and learn how to use a clutch, that's what must of us did.
