Default EVAP System Issues

I have a 99 Accord LX w/ 123k miles. My check engine light came on so I brought it to the mechanic, who said it was something related to the EVAP system (after, of course, charing me $80 or so to hook up the ODB, and conveniently enough they found about $900 worth of other crap wrong with it). They did some tests and inspection and said I would need an additional "EVAP system testing" that would cost $95, plus additional $$ to actually fix the problem after its diagnosed. I wanted my car back so I told them I'd bring it back another time.

My question is..can I do this myself? I have the honda accord shop manual, and prefer to DIY when I have time...

Is your LX a V6? Here is a TSB regarding the V6 if you get a code P0401 or P1491.

Otherwise, if you got the DTC code, post that and someone can try to narrow down the problem.
