Icon6 93 Accord heating up

My 93 honda accord has 165K Miles on it and recently started 'Engine heating up' problem. This problem started when i left my car in long term parking at Montreal Airport, the temp in montreal in these days are below freezing. I had no heat up problem with enging before this.

This problem is not consistent, some time it works fine and the temp gauge stays at the middle. Some times the gauge goes up very high close to Red hot. I have to stop the car and let it cool off and then drive again to get to my destination. After driving for about 10 - 15 km the temperature gauge goes back to normal (middle).

Also i noticed the cooling fan does not run, when i park my car, it used to run for a while before, to cool things off.

I have already tried to remove the air from radaitor by letting it run with radiator cap open and full heater on. Since i am not aware of technical things about car, if some one can provide a pictures on where to find the thermostat etc, that would be great help.

sounds like to me it could be a faulty fan controller, coolant temp sensor, or fan relay.

wouldn't be your thermostat, because, if it were, it would over heat all the time. same with too much air in the system.

i would say your problem is with the fans

I'll try to see if we can help you a little more.
Follow the bottom radiator hose up to the thermostat housing.
On top of the housing is a 2 pin connector Temp switch 'A'
With the engine at 1/2 temp on the gauge and the key turned on, unplug the connector and put a paper clip in the terminals [wire side of connector] to 'pretend' the switch is closed.
The fans should come on and run.
To help you understand the reason for the temp swings, if you are moving more than 20-25 MPH there is enough air flow over the radiator to keep the temp lowered.......
When you are in stop and go traffic....no air flow = higher temp.

If you can't get the fans to run using the jumper idea, repost and we can come up with other tests to help you correctly diagnose the real problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed your instruction and Fan started running. But it was making lot of noise almost dying... I also noticed that the one radiator hose is cold and other is hot. So there were no circulation. I changed the thermostat and cooling fan, now the temperature is where it should be and no more engine heatup.
Thanks a lot for the help.

Cheers!
