Muffinman is right too, very easy to verify what the light means; pull passenger side kick panel and jumper the open connector with a paper clip with key in position 2, and read the flashing CEL.. The speed sensor is bolted to the transmission. Use Autozone's Z-Net component locator..If a list of trouble codes isn't on Z-Net, then go to the store and look in a Haynes manual, you don't have to buy it.
The VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) is mounted to the transmission case above the differential housing - it measures the rotational speed of the differential thus indicating vehicle road speed.
It can:
Set off a flashing D4 indicator
Set off a CEL (check Engine Light) (and subsiquent DTC code)
Keep the speedo from operating.
I'll see if I can scare up a pic or two.

I don't mean to come off as rude but it *could* be unrelated - while the flashing D4 you indicated in the post right after me means it's the VSS there's no reason to spend $$ on a VSS when that isn't the problem.
I'd have the CEL checked THEN start replacing what it says is wrong.
The cluster issue could be a problem with the cluster itself - rather than the VSS (which was my case along with many others)
