Default 3 long gears VS 4 shorter gears Faster??

looking at different gear ratio and i can get a one that i like wich would drop 1 shift
so i would only use 3 gears on 26" reving to 9k this is a VW but looking for feedback

1st 77mph
2nd 114mph (6088rpm) drops from 9k
3rd 156mph (6573) drops from 9k

Vs

1st 62mph
2nd 91mph (6150rpm) 9k
3rd 124mph (6582) from 9k
4th 156mph (7134) 9k

the car makes the torque at 6200rpm so it will pull the gear no problem just need help from someone who somewhat tried this

Thanks for your time

how fast do you shift? if you take 1 sec for each shift 2 shifts will improve. on my car i can full throttle shift without feeling any interruption in powerdeleviry. if you can shift like that you could take advantage of the shorter gear ratio's (thus more power to the ground)

do you have traction problems? with longer gears you can up the boost more so more power minus less power to the ground (because of longer gears) equals ???

each setup is different, good luck

long gears = slower rate of acceleration.

"turning up the boost" is not the answer to a long gear. as soon as the tire starts to loost traction, its most likely going to go straight to the limiter.

a smaller tire is also not the answer to a long gear. it will loose traction much easier than a large tire ( for example : 24.5inch tire VS 28 inch tire)

in the case of road driven cars and effeciency, the more gears keep you in the engines powerband, where it is happiest.

if any of that crosses over or even makes any sense.

stick to the 4 speed, if we had a 4 speed auto instead of the 3 speed auto in ballards car, we would be running 8.7's.......lol

How's that work with the Supra's that run 2 speed powerglides?

Or is that a because the OEM 5 speeds can't hold the power?

I'm kind of in the same situation. I currently run the 6spd kseries trans and like it. I would just like not to be shifting into fifth gear. I could go with the 5spd and stay in 4th but the gears are longer and less acceleration power. In the begining I thought going with the 5spd would be better but I'm not so sure now. My first 1/8mile in my car is really moving for being under 500whp and it really doesn't bother me because I shift really fast and can't feel the car bog or loose any acceleration between gear changes. I've also been wondering if the 5spd would only hurt my time. or maybe do 1st and 2nd gear close to the 6spd ratios and 3rd on ratios like the 5spd. Maybe that will get me off the line like it is now but have those longer end gears and still be able to stay in 4th...???

Hence why Honda's and F1 cars need more gears. To keep the engine in the proper power band. For those of us that can't afford F1 gear boxes, we have to work with what is within our budget's. Luckily for us there are a few company's making 4 speed gear sets that work well for Honda's.

If a 3 speed was going to be faster, don't you think guy's like Tony1 would be getting one.

The 4 speed gear set seems to be the best option currently.
