Default valve cover bolts/washers (search is broken)

F23A1 engine, trying to figure out how to replace the washers/gaskets on the valve cover bolts? The bolts have these little flanges at the top of the threads so you'll know when the bolts are tight into the head. How are you supposed to get those flanges through the washers? We tried hammering one through, and it broke a piece of the washer off.

obviously just cut the old ones off. but for getting the new ones on...

first time I did this I did it by hand and killed my palms forcing the new rubber washers on. The next time I did it I used a vise and a socket to push the new washers onto the bolt. That worked so much better with no hurting my hands.

Well damn. We had the valve cover on the floor, and put the washer in the hole, and then pounded the bolt through the washer. It made the bottom center portion of the washer break off. But it was cold outside when we did it.

Would it help to heat up the rubber grommet on the washer to help get it over that flange?

Oh yeah, Touring Accord, we had your timing belt how-to open on my laptop in the garage all day today while changing pretty much everything you showed in your thread on my bro's 99 Accord today.

yeah, the cold probably didn't help.

I forgot to mention, i think I used a little oil to help the bolt flange slide through.
