Federal Vs California OBD2 ECU (P72 Gsr)
Well I need to get a new OBD2a ecu for my 97 GSR, and I found one that a guy was selling for $150 but I talked him down to $100 incl ship. Its a P72 from a 99 GSR but Its from California. I live in NC, and my questions are what is the difference in a Federal and California ECU? and Will there be any issues with using a 99 ecu in my 97 *IE (I read somewhere that there is a pressure switch in the gas tank of tegs from 98-00?!?!?!) Someone clear this up for me! Thanks
yes there are issues. you do not want to use a 99 ecu in your 97. in 98 they started using a fuel tank pressure sensor that will trip a CEL when the computer doesn't see it. you need a 96-97 p72 which sell on ebay frequently for $70 or so. i remember my 97 was a p72-a03, i think the 96 is p72-a02 but double check that one.
on the other hand. since you're going turbo down the road this is a great time to do an obd1 conversion and just get a p72 basemap on a chipped ecu.

Well good for me I already have to obdI conversion and I chipped and loaded a p72 basemap a while ago :D so I still have a ride but I have to find a obd2a ecu before NOV of next year for the inspection? If I got a 98-99 would it be easy to bypass that pressure sensor? Also I was thinking about running a test pipe and use a O2 simulator to send the correct voltage to the ecu to think there is a cat, to pass inspection without a cat so I can run a 3" exhaust, Good idea y or n?
