Anyone hardwire their portable GPS? *PIC*
I want to hard-wire my GPS but want to make sure i'm going about it is right.
Can I cut off #1 and connect it to a power source or do I have to remove #2 and connect it to a power source?

I strongly suggest don't do that.
Go to radio shack or best buy (or your local auto parts store) and get a fused female
cig socket. That way you can hard wire it without destroying the transformer and
ruining your gps unit

I agree with audioroach, get a female lighter socket. Also, if you read the output of the cig adapter, they are not always 12 volts out, they step down the voltage....
.. give it 12 volts and

The unit is using a USB connector so it's running 5volts DC, you need that inverter unit to drop and stablize the voltage to the unit, an option you can do is do a secondary hideaway cig socket or remove the pin contacts off the cig adaptor and then solder wires directly to the connectors and then tuck the whole assembly away...
The pin on the end of the cig lighter adapter goes to power and the two springy things on the side go to ground.
I've taken the plastic cover off, and soldered wired from those points to power and ground, respectively. Then tape up the whole assembly.
