I was wondering if anyone has ever done this. I did look, and could not find anything related to this topic at all. I am considering trading for a 96 hatch, and i really would like to put my IVA-W505 Alpine in it, even if it means cutting the dash were the radio is. I realize i could do a 99-00 dash swap to attain a double din opening, but i really do not want to do all that work for putting the radio in. Id rather just modify the stock opening to fit if it is possible.
Please keep stupid comments to yourselves, and any help is appreciated.

the way I think it can be done is moving the HVAC assembly down to where the pocket above the cup holder is and then widening the center bezel to fit, have to remove a mounting bracket for the deck and then fine out some way to support the double din deck...
Assuming you mean a 96-98 Civic, then yes it can be done, as CarbonizedDX mentioned, it requires moving the heater/AC control head down into the console and then fiber-glassing a double din opening into the radio/control head assembly.
I have not done one myself but an installer I know did his 98 that way, he was going to try the swap, [99-00] but would have been a lot more work, although he did end up using the radio/pocket metal mounting bracket.
The mod turned out pretty darn good, looks stock.
