Default Car Audio beginner. little help.

I'm hoping the good people here at H-T can help me out as I am new to doing really anything to my car.
I currently have an older model pioneer head unit installed in my integra. I'm lookiing to buy a newer head unit with AUX input. I know about the IP Bus to RCA then RCA to 3.5mm conversion but I'll eventually want a newer head unit anyway I would also like the USB port but thats optional for me. I just want a head unit thats not too expensive for now.

My question is mainly are there any major differences between brands that make head units? More specifically, are certain brands known for certain features or advantages over their competitors. Are there any specific specs I should be on the lookout for?

The speakers i have suck. Seems like at parts with bass, all you hear is staticy noise. it sounds just like my speakers at home after i got them wet and when i turn on my subwoofer. The second question I have is about what to look out for in terms of speakers. I see speakers advertising 2 way 3 way 4 way channels but I'm not too sure what exactly those are.

Thanks in advanced.

Kenwood gets you a lot for the money, USB or full speed Ipod decks can be had for $150-$200. Don't get caught up on "claimed" wattage output, they are all fairly equal, 15 watts a channel is more accurate for most high power head units.

As far as speakers go, its all about what sounds good to you, not me. I tend to gravitate toward Focal and Dynaudio, but that's what I work with everyday. Eclipse speakers offer good performance for a good price, but again, listen and judge for yourself.

To answer your speaker question, coaxial speakers contain a woofer, and a tweeter (or tweeters) mounted on a post in the center of the speaker. The amount of high frequency speakers in the coax is referred to as two way (one woofer, one tweeter), 3 way (woofer and two tweeters). I would stick to a 2 way or 3 way. There are also component speakers, which have separate woofers and tweeters, you can gain better performance, but the installation is more advanced, and I would recommend an amplifier for best performance with separates.

The brands i have sold that were the best for clarity, were Alpine and Nakamichi, which of those two Alpine is going to be very easy to find as opposed to Nak. Usually your "flashy" Hu's are like panasonic, sony, pioneer, jvc, etc, out of these i think i like Pioneer the best because i have seen them hold up longer than the rest, i've only worked at two audio shops and between the two i have sold all these and i with Sony, it will either last a long time, or die in the first week- sometimes hour. Jvc's for some reason usually get abused, i have seen them come back really jacked up.

Id recomend Alpine, Kenwood, and Pioneer in terms of headunints. Ive had all more than once, and all are good quality. I really prefer Alpine above all for sound quality. Pioneer would be my 2nd choice as they are very user friendly.

In terms of speakers, JL Audio, Alpine, Eclipse, and Focal are all good brands. You would probably be happy with any coaxial these companies make. But as KRock459 mentioned, 2 ways are probably the best to go with, along with an amplifier for them.

Thanks for the information. It was really helpful.

I currently have what i'm assuming to be the universal harness for my pioneer HU. If i were to get a brand other than pioneer, would I need to get a universal harness for that brand and redo the wiring? I'm not 100% sure that my question was worded correctly so please excuse the wording.
