Default My build thread: 12:1 D16z6. ED chassis. Autocross.

I started this project about 6 months ago and since then I've collected a lot of parts and lost a lot of steam do to lack of interest and trusting a shitty company to get the job done on time (Exospeed). right now i have pretty much all the parts i need, minus a few bolt on parts and the cam. I just ordered the cam and cam gear on 11/11/08, which got me VERY excited to get this thing done.

This car will solely be for track duty....and maybe be pulled out for a cruise or meet

quick specs and pics

Car:I currently have a B16 89 hatch. I'm not sure if i will sell that and get a Crx or stick with what i have
Motor: D16z6
Head: unported/stock
Cam: stage 3 Bisimoto
Valves: stock
Springs/retainers: KMS valvesrings and titanium retainers
Intake: Y8 or something aftermarket
Headers: Rage, Bisi, or something of that nature. not sure yet.
Pistons: teflon coated P29's on z6 rods with ARP bolts
Engine management: i have a P28 with crome pro but advised not to use it. (suggestions please)
Trans: cable si/ex (Debating on an mFactory gearset)
Suspension: leaning towards PIC
Exhaust: 2.5" Vibrant
Cage: maybe

The motor is a for sure thing but everything else is still on paper. I'm open to suggestions so don't be shy.

to the pics!!

ARP hardware

$200 for seat and harness. i couldn't pass it up

This is my first time building a car/honda, so any tips/techniques/advice on engine assembly is greatly appreciated.

I also just picked up a harness ($50 yeahhh!) and i know nothing about wiring so hopefully I can get some help with that.

I'll try to upated in a timely manner. I'm getting a new DD in January so hopefully the motor will be at least done by then and ready to go in

The cam should be here sometime next week. Pics will be up when that happens.

Have you looked into more coatings, like the valves?

Why a Y8 IM instead of a Z6?

Considered a DIY head porting?

More info on the seat (butt seat, not valve seat)?

I know its a pain, but could you put some prices on everything as a reference?

I haven't really checked out valves. If i were get any I'd prolly do black nitrate.

As far as i know, the y8 performs better. I personally don't know have any proof, just what i read. I can kinda see why though. Physically, the y8 is bigger. I wish I knew the dynamics of a IM/cam relationship

I have a spare a6 head in my garage that I wanted to practice porting, but never got around to it.

The seat is an f1spec fiberglass seat. The one I have is actually the pass. because the guy I bought it from was only using the drivers seat.

I actually have a list in my wallet with all the parts and prices. I added it up at work today and came up with around $1500 minus the cost of the motor

motor with trans-$400
cam, cam gear, IM gasket- around $500
pistons with rings-$140
rod bearings-$30
rod bolts-$50
headstuds-$80
wiring harness-$50
clutch-$80
springs/retainers-$280
headgasket-$30
timing belt-$25
water pump-$35
thermostat-$20
obd conversion harness-$90

kinda steep, but I'm sure it will be well worth it

I agree, the build will be good and well worth it.

What I've been reading is the Y8 IM is better for FI and the Z6 is better for NA, and its mostly due to the length and size of the runners.

wrong y8 im is better for both, because its just plain bigger. my friend put one on his d16z6 n/a and he beat me by almost a half car as to be4 i would take him by a fender

I can kinda believe that cause another guy I know on here runs on the strip and his class resticts his IM to OEM and he uses a Y8 instead of a Z6.

Wow. I thought this thread was deleted.

The cam is here and I stripped the head. This weekend I hope to get the pistons in the block and find a cable trans so I can take it apart.

As far as the head goes I need to sell some shizz so I can buy some new valves and seals.

haha the cam and gear are the most expensive things on your list!

if you're going to run a race seat and harness, you need a cage, or at least a roll bar. Harness w/o rollover protection = major no-no.

Together, yeah it wasn't cheap, but the engine management won't be cheap either.

So I picked up an SI trans lastnight and I am having one hell of a time trying to get it open. All the bolts are off and I'm spreading that clip. I don't know if it's cause I'm alone or there is a bolt I am missing. There is a small allen screw at the top that I tried to take off but it rounded out. Would it be connected to a shaft inside?

Lol not at all. We need to save the SOHC's! The potential of them needs to be heard.
