i want to do this swap with either the z6 or y8, i havent decided that part yet but i already have a d16a6 swap in the car.

my problem lies with the rpm switch/vtec controller/obd1 conversion.

i do not want to go the route of the rpm switch but i am confused on whether i need a vtec controller if i DO HAVE the p28, obd1 dizzy, 5-wire o2, and obd0-obd1 harness adapter.

everything else with this swap is easy enough but this is confusing me, do i need a controller even if i have the obd1 set up? or is the controller meant for people that DO NOT convert to obd1?

in the mini-me swap into crx write up and in the mini-me theory page there is no mention of a new ecu or obd conversion, only a controller or rpm switch. i want to do this right and if i need to convert, then thats what i'll do its not that pricey.

OBD1 VTEC is controlled entirely by the ECU - OBD1 on the SOHC VTEC is the only way to go - having an rpm switch with OBD0 ECU is a terrible solution - when VTEC engages, the OBD1 VTEC ECU supplies more fuel and advances the ignition timing as needed to account for the more aggressive camshaft - this doesn't happen with rpm switch and OBD0 ECU

you need 4-wire O2, not 5-wire

Yesir. You need an obd-1 ecu (i.e. P28) 4 wire o2 sensor (that's what the obd-1 ecu reads), obd-1 dizzy (I assume you already have one with the motor) and obd-1 injectors (assuming you have them cuz it came with the motor.) THat's it.

A vtec controller is a piggyback that you can use for tuning. It has nothing to do with you going obd-1.

 

**** i forgot about the injectors....those can get a lil pricey but i want to stick with oem, or oem replacement from autozone or something.

let me get your opinion tho...z6 or y8? is there a reason why one is preferred over the other?

 

you don't need to switch to OBD1 injectors - the OBD0 injectors will work as long as you keep the injector resistor box - if you do switch to OBD1 injectors, you will need to disable/remove the injector resistor box

 

ok well thats good news cuz thats another 100$+ right there. i think the most expensive item i have to replace is the dizzy..

might be dumb to ask but is the fuel rail off the d16a6 ok to use?

 

if your not changing the many then yes.

 

the A6 fuel rail doesn't bolt onto the Z6 or Y8 intake manifold - it will work, just doesn't attach correctly - the Z6 fuel rail would be better to use and it looks better

 

but the A6 rail works with the A6 manny which works with the z6 head....fuel rail is fine as of right now i'll go AEM or something later.

the Z6 manifold is a little better and you can put a larger throttle body on it

 

The y8 manifold makes power where single cams need it though it makes better mid-range power.

 

ahh ok would this be an ideal set up then....y8 mani with the z6 head and y8 fuel rail? then i'de need a y8 FPR and ASSUMING obd1 injectors.

 

You can still keep the OBD0 injectors and resistor box with the y8 manifold and fuel rail. The guy i got my car from will swear by the z6 head/y8 manifold combo he says it's the best stock d-series parts.

 

i am really anxious to do this set up but i still have to buy everything....

this is my list of "to do's" for this weekend...

1. Replacing front struts.
2. Prelude fog install under bumper lenses.
3. With Kyrlon Stained Glass Paint, making my own amber bump lens' and corner lens'.
4. Adding JDM sidemarkes.

I need to get a Yakima rack but not really too sure where to get one, i looked on their website and i didnt see the EF sedan listed as a car they make the racks for :-(

dont get the Y8, its oil ports in the block are way smaller than any of the other D series Motors. I would run a Z6 longblock or a combination of a A6 block and a Z6 head with the Y8 Manifold. ALthough the only think i dont like about the Y8 is that the AIT sensor has nowhere to plug in to the manifold. So chose your setup wisely. Good luck!

i even called the dealer around here and they said there is no front lip for EX or any other trim level ef sedan

 

clean sedan. i'm not the only one on fat fives lol. it looks like from the parts illistration you have that its of a 88-89 style front bumper. idk if that makes a difference because i didn't think any of the sedans came with a lip.

 

well either way i mean [freak] its right there haha...there is a lip in existance but that part is exluded from the list
