Gonna try and Auto-X a GT-1 race car
Going to the Canadian nationals this weekend, a 2 day event.
But..... Instead of using my CSP Civic, I am gonna run our GT-1 Corvette.
We are kinda worried we won't be able to make it through some of the gates, as the damn thing has a horrible turning radius, also kinda wondering if we are going to be able to get any heat in the tires. I did a Solo I a couple weeks ago and I couldn't get any heat.
Anyone ever Auto-X with Goodyear Sportscar specials?

Turning radius could be brutal, too, especially if you have any tight hair pins on the course. Maybe you'll need to spin the rear tires a bit to pivot on the fronts.
And you're probably right about getting heat in the tires -- if they're R rubber made for the track, then they're a harder compound than R rubber made for autocrossing; the track rubber requires some speed and time to get them up to temp. Good luck and have fun.[Modified by Neo, 7:53 AM 7/31/2002]
Dude, if you're not careful you're going to end up like the loser in the Lamborghini on the Rice Boy Page.

Now, I'm not questioning you as a driver, but if that Vette is going to be as hard to drive as you're implying, you might not want to do it.

Man, if you think you have some tough competition at your local autocross event, check out what we have to run against in San Diego!
So you may be wondering why I have a Lamborghini Diablo SV in the Rice-Boy Page Hall of Shame. Well... just because you have a fast car doesn't mean you're not a rice-boy. It just means you have a fast car.

That's not a quarter mile trap speed folks, that was this guy's lap time. Now, comparing autocross run times doesn't really work, since every autocross venue is a different size, and even in the same venue, the course is different every time. But to give you an idea of how slow this time is... most of the guys with stock class Miata's were running in the 95 to 110 second range, on this approximately 1 mile long course. Even the guy driving a stock Geo Metro managed to squeak by with a time of around 125 seconds.
This Diablo got a 134.081, and I believe he hit 1 cone in the process as well. When this guy lined up to start his first run, everyone busted out their cameras. But by the time he crossed the line with this time... not a single person had any respect for him. He came here expecting everyone to be impressed with himself and his car. Instead, he made a big fool of himself. Although his car has plenty of go, it was obvious that this guy was all show!
If you have any doubts about my reasoning in putting up a Diablo in the hall of shame, perhaps you should read the response I received from the owner of this car himself, which appeared in the July 29, 1999 edition of the Responses of the Week.

I doubt that car has a worse radius than a Formula 440/500. Those things suck. I am sure the car will make it through.

yeah those big muscular cars are not meant for an auto-x track. I know someone that has a Diablo who auto-x's. The car gets decent times but not what some would expect. They are not meant to be driven on a tight course, but rather on long fast tracks.
how did you manage to get someone to let you borrow a GT-1 corvette...unless it's yours? ? ?

Have you EVER driven a RWD V8 in an autocross? If not pay someone to let you drive a 405Hp Z06 Corvette and then see what you think about "muscular" cars in an autocross.

I don't think that dude in the Diablo is a loser, he just doesn't have any experience, anyone thinking he is a loser for trying should be removed from the sport.
Chikai, the car is not mine, I am on a team, they have 3 cars, this Vette is our "fun" car, it does local events, I usually co-drive it with our team engineer.
It is not a full on modern TA type GT-1 car, we have one of those but I don't drive that car.
I will post a pic.

This is the car, its a 1963 Split window. The body is original from the firewall back, but, under the body it is not much of a vette anymore. Its a full roadrace car, tube frame, dry sump, 500hp SB, highly modded FR and R suspension, rear suspension narrowed to accept 14" wide slicks. 4spd Jerico, tilton race clutch and pedals, blah blah.
Under the body, the car is almost a sister to our modern Trans Am Camaro, alot of the Vette parts were spares for that car, or parts off that car when we updated. The Camaro is the car in my Avatar.

Well, as long as the turning radius is there, ******* go for it.
The NASA event I ran in May had a couple older Vette like that. Not GT-1 cars, but that size.
One of them actually had on REALLY wide low profile tires, so he was about 8-12 inches wider than that one, and he fit fine.
Totally do it.

but driving a purpose-built track car like a GT-1 prepped Vette at an autocross is entirely another...
Also - look at the SCCA B-Prepared and C-Prepared classes at the Solo II Nats. A fully prepped BP/CP car is GT1 eligible and many of the BP cars actually have the GT1 designations on them. They are fast as ***** in those events.
