I have a '98 Accord (V-6) with 160K miles. It has been a great car for me. However lately I have noticed that whenever I accelerate, especially from a stopped position, I hear a transient rattling sound that appears to be emanating from behind the dashboard. It generally never happpens when accelerating or deaccelerating at higher speeds. With the falling gas prices, I have started using premium gas so we will have to see if that helps. The tech said to wait until it got worse because of the labor involved, but it is driving me crazy. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

You are saying that there is pinging preignition?

What did the "tech" say was the problem that is so labor intensive?

 

usually when i hear a rattling sound when accelerating from a dead stop i think catalytic converter or exhaust leak ... just a thought ...

 

I would suggest running a few tanks of High-test fuel thru it , b4 you start throwing any money at it.
It's possible you've got one (or possibly) two conditions.
Carbon clogged EGR Ports (Honda has a TSB issued for it) and a subsiquent Octain ping.
Has the ECM thrown a code yet?
Honda also had a tech bulletin for these vehicles involving a federaly mandated Extended Emissions Warranty to 150,000 miles. You're slightly over the milage perameter, but asking won't hurt.
