check engine light code 96
A check engine light (CEL) is just your car telling you "something is wrong". Problems which bring up codes can affect runability or emissions. The CEL being lit on your dash doesn't automatically indicate one particular problem.
You need to get the code read first.
Here's how you do it for free and with little trouble.
Go to Autozone or another auto parts store.
Tell an employee there, "I have a check engine light (CEL) and would like to get my codes scanned. I drive a '96 Civic."
They will go to your car and plug the scan tool into a 16-pin socket that sits to the right of your hood latch in your driver's foot well.
Then they will turn the car to ACCESSORY.
Then select that you want to read codes and wait for the code(s) to pop up.
Write down the codes and go inside and get a print out describing the CEL number (it will start with a "P"), the description of the code and the most common causes for said code.
Once you get that, then you can come back and ask for more help. As is it's like if I made a thread and said, "My car is having a problem. It's a '98. How can I fix this?"
