Default Duac vs F4i

I'm looking at a 600 class monster, even the 900s seem in my price range around 4k. Whats the difference in performance between the monsters and f4i? I'm looking to pickup something good for commuting and I'd like to see what the ducati's are all about. I want to hit the track this summer as well and look to pickup a salvage RR or something of the like.

Ducati has more of a relaxed riding positon, better for everyday riding. F4i probly isn't the worst for everyday, but it isn't great either. Unless your going to get the 900, and even then the performance edge goes towards the honda, but the 600 monster is plenty for an entry level rider. You do have to do the valve and belt adjustment at 5k or 7k on the Ducati, I don't remember everything, but the honda is more of an oil change and clean & lube the chain only bike.

I'd also recomend an SV650 or FZ6, a bit cheaper than the F4i plenty of power, and good everyday riding position.

F4i.... faster, more power, easier to find parts, less maintenance, harsh seating (by comparison) Sportier ergos, and styling. cheaper to get parts for

Duc. THe opposites of above, and more exotic.

Depends on what your looking for, I think an sv would be more suitable if you were looking for all the other things minus the exotic factor.

sup gurl is the user that has ridden/owned both.

I haven't exactly ridden a monster, but I ride an sv650 and I've owned and ridden an F4i before too.

To me, it's not so much the riding position, but the engine platform that separates these bikes.

If I was going to just be doing a lot of touring, I think I might go for the F4i with some raised clipons and a double-bubble windscreen.
But because I spend most my time bombing around the city and changing my speed a lot, I prefer the twin. More usable torque, more of the time.

I'd be curious to hear what sup gurl has to say about ducati ownership. I think he also owned a 748 after that.

Forgot to mention, I own an F4i, put 4k on it over the season. I just keep drooling over the idea of a Ducati, something a bit different from the plastic covered sportbikes, but its hard to giveup the speed if thats what i loose in the 600 class going honda to duac

your not gonna want a slower carb'd 599 after riding an f4i, or atleast thats my opinion. id personally stick with the f4i unless you do your own maintenance, then id say get the monster 900 and try something new.

sv's are great too cause you have so much modding you can do, gsxr forks, zx-6r shock, f3 wheel and so on.

I previously owned an '03 F4i. I'm looking into a Buell xb9sx or a Triumph Street Triple. I love the rumble of V-twins. If I had the money I'd get the Duc 848, but I think that's an L-twin.

An L twin is just a 90 degree V twin.

I can't decide what to do with my f4i now. Its in decent shape and most the plastics are good but the tank has a ding, the tail has a slight scrape, and the upper by the headlight is split down to the headlight. Should I sell what I have and get sliders?

Anybody made the jump?

I do my own work, are the 900 monsters FI twins?

2000 and up 900 monsters are fuel injected Twins.

Jumping from a F4i to a 900 monster is a large stepdown in power. You'll get a better torque curve and friendlier riding ergonomics, but other than that your sacrificing to the F4i, (Aside from maybe looks, the 900 is hot) and If your worried about power loss don't even consider an old 600, the power output is dismal compared to the F4i.

If your looking for a naked commuter that's on the level with an F4i then I would bank on an S4R or if you want a friendlier commuter look into a S2R1000 monster, but both of them are slightly out of your 4K price range.

If you want a 600 commuter take the SV650 over the monster 600, cheaper, more reliable, more usable torque curve, and massive aftermarket support, and this is coming from a huge monster fan.

I think I just get picky about my f4i having not ridden it in a few days. Sounds like the monsters are a good ways off from my f4i.

Now how about an RR

I don't think you're going to see much different in power between an RR and an F4i. On cbrforum.com there are a number of people who switched from F4i's to '07 or '08 RR's and they said their F4i's "felt" faster but I doubt they actually were. The new RR seating is more aggressive for communiting and the seat is pretty rough. It will stop/handle better than the F4i.

the power difference b/w an F4i and newer 600 is hard to notice when you're in the saddle. but side by side, there's no contest.

it's anecdotal, but a friend (k6 gsxr6) and I (f4i) were at pahrump and I was absolutely dusted down the back straight. I exited turn 7 right behind him, with good drive, and he still put about 8 bike lengths on me by the time we were braking for 8.

Where did you get the idea that new RR has 30 more hp? I thought most people with later model F4i's were dynoing at around 90hp to the wheel while a new RR would dyno at 100-105? Is this in-accurate?

I know they are probably a good 30lbs lighter though.

the wiki said 118 hp + a "significant" amount from the ram air, i figured that to be another few ponies

I hate gixxers so much-I don't care what it takes I will train to destroy them.

that might be to the crank or the crank pin (where you can measure the most hp)

as far as whp the newer 600rr only sees 106-107 at best with a stock tune

i think the f4i had like 97whp
