I have searched and still haven't found what I was looking for. Any suggestions on identifying what year motor this is much appreciated. Buyer said it is a 96 jdm gsr. My plans are to get it bar in a 96 civic. Any suggestions would help. Thank You

searching is great...
Look above the 3rd exhaust port, you'll see a number (9|X)...which is the year of the engine.
Add 1, and you'll know the year of the chassis it came from.
(looks like an older distributor though....)

I know it's a jdm b18c but I'm not sure if he is telling the truth about the year of the motor. He did mention that the motor came out of a 89 civic. I asked him about the receipt and he said he is still looking for it until then I want to figure if this is really a 96 or not.

You can but you need to add all the USDM emissions sensors, and us a USDM ECU. The block code must also be a USDM block code, IE B16A would mean USDM B16A3 or B16A2 depending on the year. Something like a DOHC ZC wont pass because there is no USDM equivalent.

I went to the smog ref in San Diego two years ago, so I have some experience with the BAR process.
A 1996 Civic is OBD2 so the motor will need to be set up for OBD2.
All B18C, B18C1, and B18C5 motors have the EXACT same bare engine block castings. Despite what the law says, the year and block code of the motor is not important to the smog ref if.............
1) You can prove you changed the pistons to USDM spec compression. JDM B18C had 10.6:1 compression. USDM B18C1 has 10.0:1 compression. And since the JDM B18C uses the same cylinder head casting as a USDM B18C1 the pistons need to be changed to yield lower compression. If you cannot prove this, then the JDM B18C code will cause you to fail.
2) The intake manifold is a USDM GSR OBD2 manifold
3) The GSR exhaust manifold or aftermarket header is USDM or CARB certified
4) The ECU is a USDM P72 OBD2 unit
5) You will need the crank angle sensor
6) You will need two O2 sensors pre and post cat
7) Set up the smog canisters, PCV valve, and vacuum lines like an OEM motor. Use a Helm's manual if needed.
When you go to the smog ref, make sure you don't display those cam gears. Adjustable cam gears will not pass visual rules. Get a used cheap stock valve cover if necessary.
