Default HELP! my EG's engine/dizzy :(

Hey everyone, hope somone can provide some advice here i have a D15Y7 DX motor.

Backstory: Ok.. so for the last little while my cars been having some trouble with cold/prolonged sitting starts, if i drive it frequently daily it always ran decent, but if I let it sit for a couple days then began to drive it, on start it would REALLY bog out, and put/backfire until it was warm, but then it would run fine.

More Recently, it's been doing it more/worse, and in the last couple weeks, i've been losing power badly, an example would be, the car seems to be idiling fine, so i back out of my driveway and put it in gear and start to drive, within the first few hundred feet the engine will bog out and lose -ALL- power, it is similar to pulling the plug on a radio or somthing, slowly losing all power and engine noise, BUT if i keep the throttle pinned to the floor, before it dies it will rev back up, squeel the tires, and keep going

but even after that sometimes until the car has been driven for 10-15 minutes, it might lose power or do that same thing again, until the car has warmed up it seemed

Well anyways this morning i got in and started it and like usually it turned over, but as i didnt rev the **** out of it, it died, but now it would not start..

I tried a couple times, popped the hood etc. then i drive to let out the clutch as i was turning the motor, that ended up in some kind of Oily/nasty smoke coming into my car through the vents... lol i dunno...

Also.. the Dizzy currently in my car is a "hybrid" so to speak, it's the "DX" housing, with "SI" guts that i replaced them with when my other dizzy went, we did a good job replacing it but it may be the problem as well..

OH..and my cars pretty much always burned a little oil, probably go through a 4L jug topping up over 2 months of driving?

here pics of the plugs i pulled, the 3rd one there had alot more oil then the rest:

any ideas of problems that could be more severe then plugs?

im buying new plugs tom so i will update after that as well.

Thats is horrible, how bad does this car smoke?!?! I would guess that your rings are shot, but is there any on the plug wires on the ends? The plug tubes could be leaking too.
Plug gap looks way too big also

When your buying plugs check out the back page of any Haynes manual.

You'll find pictures of bad spark plugs

Looks kind of like preignition and ash deposits

Mang, them some horrible looking plugs.

the car is old and I feel like an idiot for not pulling the plugs sooner..

the wires are still in good shape, MSD wires older but should be fine..

the There is no oil on the plug wires themselves, and there is also no oil in the plug tubes.. so thats somewhat relief..

[freak] i maintain my Honda dirtbikes to the T, cant belive i havent pulled the plugs until now

Most of us like OEM plug wires better then MSD.

A good OEM tune up would help.

i would recommend changing out the spark plug grommets also if theres that much oil on the spark plug threads

a good set of NGK's would work idk what part number though if u were boosted i would know what ones you would need

Hey guys, so i swapped in some new plugs and the problem still persisted, so we narrowed it down to the fuel system

I had never been able to swap out my Fuel filter, so we figured that was the bottleneck where the fuel was being slown down by buildup etc. so finally i got the old one off and replaced it.

the motor seemed to run back to normal after that once i started it again, the fuel seemed to be flowing and i drove it and it seemed fine

but now it's doing the same thing again? it's dieing because the motor isnt getting enough fuel it seems, just sitting in my driveway reving the motor, i will keep a consistant throttle position probably at like 3000rpm, and it will rev fine, but eventually it will sputter and die?

but it sometimes wont die if i keep the pedal floored until the fuel kicks back in, so it seems like it could be:

Injectors
Regulator Valve [forgot the proper name for it]
or fuel pump

what do u guys think? its weird it ran so well once i swapped the new fuel filter in, but then started acting up again...

Neither of those things would contribute to the problem I've described as it has happened, the problem is clearly with the fuel system at some point

fuel pressure and volume test...... also pull the vaccum line from the regulator and make sure there is no fuel in the vaccum line if there is than the regualtor diaphram is blown....

K guys another update, hopefully somone can shed some light..

So i replaced the fuel filter, still had problems

So i replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator....IT WORKED!! or so i thought..

after i replaced the fuel regulator it ran freakin AWSOME! like it turned over, the idle was perfect, and that seemed like it was the problem, it no longer sputtered, died, blowing a tonne of smoke out etc. it seemed to run fine..

so i just drove it around, and it was once again driving great.. so i took it a little further out of my neighborhood to a gas station to top it up

it ran perfect right up until i pulled in and turned it off to fill up

but once i filled up and tried to start it again.. it sputtered and died again!

so im like WTF...i try again and it seems to be not getting any fuel, so i gun it and give it more fuel, it seems to go so i pull out of the gas station and into a parking lot next door, it dies there and WILL NOT start.. same problem as before its just going "na na na na na na" as the starter is trying to turn over, but it wont go..

Eventually fed up i hold the ignition down so the starter is clicking and just put the pedal to the floor, it then stutters hard once, blows a tonne of smoke out and then STARTS!

once it blew out all the smoke it seemed like it was running fine, and i was able to drive it home perfectly, it didnt die once

so wtf..??? what do u guys think? does the fuel pump come in intermidantely? could it have been a pocket of air or somthing in a line from replacing those 2 things?

Hey guys so here's an update, last night i figured out the reason why my Car was running fine, but then dieing after it had been running was my Main relay, i fixed the main relay and drove it around all night last night, it was running awsome! seriously better then it had been in a longgg time

so this morning i drove to work with zero problems, the car was running great after i fixed my Main Relay, and it was honestly running the best it's run in the last 2 years

but on the drive home after work, while i was going up 200th street my car bogged out and lost power again like it had before.. so i was like WTF....

luckilly the car kicked back in and kept going, but it felt very much the same as it had been doing before..

so i keep going and then turn onto 192nd because i know theres more room to pull over if i die etc. on the way towards 192 it starts to bog out badly again but it eventually kicks back in as i Floor it, it spits out a bunch of black smoke but keeps going

I make it onto 192nd and turn down towards the freeway, at this point my car seemed like it was -done- it had no more power going as i had the pedal to the floor, and it was just putting and sounded like backfiring [i dont think it was actually backfiring though]

so thinking im [freak]ed im rolling down the hill and the only thing keeping my motor running is that im going down hill, then i hear a puttt puttt puttt, i look in my rear view and i see 2 GLOWING MOLTEN chunks of whatever the [freak] it is.. clearly they came outa my car.. so im like ohhhh [freak]kk.. those are peices of my pistons..

so eventually i get into the flats and my car dies, i jump out and walk back up the street and retreive this molten chunks, figuring my car is [freak]ed i start calling people for a ride, but then I jump back in my car and it starts no problem...

I then drive it all the way home from 192nd with zero problems, no loss of power, and no backfiring

These are the chunks that spat out my muffler:

it looks like peices of melted cat?

on EG's where is the O2 sensor? do u guys think the loss of power like i described could be from a totally [freak]ed up cat?

Sooooooooooooooooo ....
go buy that book.
1001 uses for a dead cat.
and get e new one while you're at it, a plugged cat will give the sysmtoms you described and cause your engine to heat up those plugs, could have done a lot more damage if you hadn't cought it in time, it still may have burned exhaust valves.
Do a compression/leakdown test next.

ohhh.. and by the way, right after it spat out those molten peices of cat, my engine light came on, but once the engine died, and sat for 5 minutes while i collected those peices, it started and i drove it home without the light on any longer

but yea.. the Cat can cause the dieing/loss of power problems?

You know, you keep on saying it and wont admit it cause it is alot worst then the fuel system but you have either a blown headgasket, rings, or valve seals\guides. there is no way you would get that bad of build up on plugs without something besides air and fuel getting into the cly. Your number 1 sign should be the SMOKE coming out of the exhaust. you probally burned up the cat casue oil\coolant is getting getting into the cly and not allowing for combustion and sending the left over fuel into the cat and melting it. the other thing is when you stop the car you give the cly a chance to fill up with oil\coolant and untill rev the **** out of it do you get it clear enough to actually get off a cycle. 2 things you should do is look and see if and how much oil you are losing and also how much coolant you are losing. obiviously if you are drinking either one and there arent any external leaks then it has to go somewhere. gl man your going to need it. the other thing is if it was a fuel problem your plugs would be white as hell do to the lean condition and very excessive cly temps.

Read my posts above..

I've fixed all the starting problems, it was the main relay and now it starts no problem

it's -ALWAYS- burnt oil, and the amount it burns now is no different then 2 years ago

it's -NEVER- burnt coolant, and still doesnt

yes perhaps theres more to the problem then meets the eye, but before that **** blew out the cat, as i said, the car was running as good, if not better then it has in the last 2 years, and it seemed to be running good again as soon as it blew out those chunks.

I'm getting virtually free parts to do these repairs, the cat will be the first thing i'll have to pay for.

no to mention this is most likely the origional cat, and this car is pushing 400,000km's..

bad rings yes.. maybe burning some oil yes... but a blown headgasket.... NO EFFIN WAY!!! dood ... he never ever meantioned a loss in compression.. just it would bog down or not start... or a single incidence of it overheating.....btw if a honda d , b, or h series blows a head gasket 90% of the time its between cyl's 2-3 ... and its from the cooling jackets to the cc's.....you can pop it otherwise but that would not lead to oil consumption my friend......

to generalize certain motors and pretty much all honda motors to blowing headgaskets in between certain cly's and over heating is way more far fetched then the idea by it self. A gasket will blow where ever it wants or where ever it is the weekest. also I have seen blown headgaskets and not over heat and yes it was on a honda. the coolant going into the cly would not allow for the combustion to take place and cause a misfire. otherwise it was fine untill it ran out of coolant and then it would overheat but any car will over heat without coolant. Either way I may have missed something in your post and I aplogize for that but I am just giving you my opinion and the fact that you know its burning oil and has been I think I would be more concerned with that cause theres no point on putting money into a toasted motor.

Yep. I don't know that i've ever seen a honda blow a head gasket between cylinders 2 and 3. And you wont see a piece missing either, just some pinholes in the gasket material.
