Default Stripped oil drain plug ????? (help needed)

Ok I just changed the oil the other day on my geezer and I think my oil drain plug is stripped. This is what happened; I was tightening the drain plug bolt (yes, I was using a torque wrench set to 33lbs) and I noticed that it would tighten to a certain point and then I can feel the thread jump back and it would loosen slightly.... this would repeat itself if I kept trying to tighten so I could never get to tighten to 33lbs.

I needed my car so I left it as tight as it would go before jumping back and put in the oil. Its not leaking that much but nevertheless it is leaking about 1 drop every 5 minutes. What do I do to fix this problem?? Do I need a new drain plug bolt or would the thread on my oil pan be the problem??? Any help is appreciated

David

look at the bolt head and see if its rounded, the threads on the bolt AND the oil pan and see where your problem is.. if its the drain plug then just go get a new drain plug.. shouldn't cost that much.. if its the threads in your drain pan/oil pan..then its going to cost you some = (... its probably the drain plug though... I bought one a week or 2 ago for under $5...

if you have trouble removing the rounded bolt w/ a socket or it slips or whatever and won't come off.. get a vise grip and grip on it and turn.. or get a crescent wrench (is that what its called?.. its a big wrench w/ angled jaws that grip.. kinda like a giant needle nose plier w/ angled tip)...grip on the bolt and turn to loosen and it should come off...

My 90 Teg was the same thing.
Turned out the thread on the oil pan was stripped.
After putting in new oil pan, I also installed http://www.fumotovalve.com/ as a
preventative measure.

Rtzx9r: 33 ft/lbs is factory spec on B18B's and C's.

You are using a new aluminum washer right?

if the oil pan threads are messed up, you can repair it...

Go buy some Heli-coil of the correct thread diameter and step, remove the oil pan, drill out the old messed up thread, tap the hole, insert the heli-coil, and there you go, a brand-new thread in the old oil pan.
Heli-coil is kinda expensive (depending on size) but still cheaper than a new oil pan.
And go buy a new drain plug as well.

You can go to Jiffy Lube, they have an assortment of piggy back drain plugs. It's a bolt with a smaller bolt inside. The larger size is permanently installed into the pan and you use the smaller one to drain the oil.

Other wise you could just buy the next size up in bolts and retap the pan to fit it.

http://www.fumotovalve.com/ is interesting. But I am afraid that a rock might hit the lever to the drain position. I would give it a try if it has a better locking mechanism.

doesnt seem like all the oil would drain out since the thread of that thing is in the pan. a good amount of oil might not drain out.
