Wow information overload!

Seriously help us help you by providing the following:

Year/make/model of vehicle

Stock engine? If not what year/make/model is engine from, and what OBD are you running?

Also if you're in CA good luck straight piping that car and getting past smog!

^^^ also are you talking about the primary or secondary O2.

Primary is always mandatory, secondary is emissions only and can be bypassed if desired.

primary = pre-cat
secondary = post-cat

First of all just a friendly correction - it's VTEC, not Vtech.

I'm not from Cali, but from what I've read here on H-T you're going to have a difficult/impossible time getting your car BAR'd because in Cali that B20 engine is considered an SUV engine and thus is illegal for use in a passenger car such as a Civic.

Not only that but running catless is also highly illegal there and they do roadside equipment checks out there.

If any of you Cali guys feel like correecting me, or adding to what I've posted that'd be great.

you definately need the o2 sensor.

if your living in cali and you wanna deal with those annoying smog laws, id reccomend keeping your old piping with the cat and swapping it everytime you go to the smog shop. but since you already have a B20 in there, you definately wont pass visual...

unless of course you bribe them to pass you...

[edit] let it be noted that i am not telling him to do anything illegal

Ahh...the hassles of living in California with a modded vehicle. I cant imagine having all these inspections and whatnot. Until HT, i had honestly never heard of such things...good luck

Its my understanding that in california if you swap in a new engine than the vehicle you must use the OBD version of the engine not the car. In other words you need to convert the car to OBD2 to pass emissions/bar/smog. Crazy i know. Also as numerous other people have stated B20s are considered a light truck engine and wont pass simply based on the engine code, even though in terms of actual emissions they would probably pass just fine. And so far as I know straight pipe is illegal pretty much everywhere in north america. All I can suggest is put some exhaust on so you don't attract attention and register out of state.

well i had a str8 pipe with an exhaust in my EK. It was LOUD AS HELL!
cops pulled me over 2 days after i got the str8 pipe and gave me a fix it ticket.
but the shop that put the str8 pipe made an adjustment on it so the second 02 sensor could be attached.

but FOR SURE it will NOT pass smog.
and if you get pulled over and if the cop tells you to pop the hood and sees the b20 in it, he might have it impounded.
CALI BLOWS! i gotta move outta here!

I would not recommend running straight pipe period in cali. Easy way to get pulled over, just for noise.

Get the 02 sensor or a 02 simulator. Straight pipe is too loud. Not worth the tickeets in my opinion. Gotta love the east coast, they don't care out here,

Yah its the same here, Yuma, no smog, any swap, anything goes, but im told that you CAN get in trouble for not running a cat, in any state. is this false information?

If you're gonna do any tuning in California, make sure it's legit. Straight pipe is definitely not. It's getting harder and more expensive to find someone to pass you for smog and if you get caught, the car is gonna either get impounded or ticketed and slapped with a BAR inspection.

hell yea. cali blows and it blows harder and harder every day!
but luckily for me, im a fire explorer and i ALWAYS have my jacket that has a patch that says "SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT" and everytime i get pulled over the cop sees the patch, asks if i work for them or something, i tell them im an explorer and they let me go. JUST LIKE THAT! except for 1 that pulled me cuz of my exhaust. but he only gave me a fix it ticket. other than that NO TICKET!!!! 0 POINTS!!
WOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!

Primary yes, how else is the ECU going to run the EFI?

The secondary sensor that's in the cat? Screw it. My cat light is on, I got used to it. Car runs fine.

Thank god I don't live in California. I love Japan, I can drive around with a full cage, bucket, straight pipe and no interior and nobody will say **** but nice car.
