Default carbon fiber hood question

My car has a cf hood on it that appears to be a few years old. When its wet it looks brand new, but once it dries it looks faded and chipped in a few places. I dont have the funds to buy a new hood at the moment so I thought about maybe sanding the hood with a really really fine sandpaper, and then shooting it with a coat of clear coat. Can this even be done or will it destroy my hood?

Either do that, or just try buffing it with a fine cut polish then a good wax job.

yup, a re-clear will make it look like new. Make sure to keep it waxed since they take a beating from the sun.

I tried buffing mine with a fine polish and then waxing it. Didn't really help much. It's good for a temporary thing. I'm having it re-cleared soon.

I think there is a carbon fiber polish available... I had a cf hood and I remember seeing a polish like that somewhere (then my hood broke off while I was doing 110 down a hill! but thats another story) check your local auto store, I am pretty sure they got it though.

no no no no. once the uv rays get threw the gel coat....1, you cant sound it down past the gel b.c then youd ruin your hood. and 2 even if you dont brake threw the gel and clear it, its not going to work b.c the carbon its self has been faded by the suns uv rays. i tryed to save mine and it looks good every where the carbon its self isnt faded. looks almost brand new. but all the spots. (mostly around the v body line b.c the sun hits those areas the most) is still faded. andddd i know it was done right b.c i am a painter so i know what im doing. sorry to say but chances are if your whole hood is faded. its bad enough to that it is past the gel coat. :/

when i cleared mine it was only fadded slighly in aroudn the body line in the hood.. best thing to do is when you get a cf hood. invest in a clear coat. i wish i would of. know i need to buy me a new hood.... sooner or later.

or if your tired of CF and like having a lighter hood, just paint it back to the car's color.....
