Default I put a hole in my engine block!!! can it be fixed?!?!?

so i went to do the headgasket today and i thought i had everything ready for the head to come off. i pried on the power steering pump bracket to break the seal and i heard something snap! theres a bracket that connects from the backside of the exhaust manifold to the block that was still attached and it broke a section off, and left a nice big hole in the block. WOW DO I FEEL LIKE A COMPLETE MORON NOW!!! i work on cars everyday, i have done engine swaps and work like this before so im beating myself up for making this insanely stpuid mistake. my question is: can a good tig welder take the piece that broke off and weld it back to the block or do i have to get a new engine?

It's hard to say. Likely not.
Take a good clear picture really close to the break and zoomed out. We can tell better then.

I've never seen an engine block that was successfully welded.

Actually that should be last very long after being welded...

Embarrased about what?
Sh**t happens and then we fix it, ok?

Broken starter mounting flanges, transmission cases; yeh I've seen a few.

You may be able to have it welded. However the block will have to be cleaned thoroughly in order to keep from having the weld becoming contaminated.

ah screw it i just found a used engine that is gonna cost 350 delivered right to my shop. the tranny in the car shifts a bit rough so i may just buy the whole deal for 650. i only spent 800 on the car so what do i have to lose. im going to take a look at it now and im bringing a compression tester with me so i dont get screwed.

If you're going that far you might as well replace the car too.

Why not spend $700 and have a car that'll run another 300k?

why replace the car? its in good shape and i just dropped $800 on it. that would be quite a waste of $800. the engine i looked had 142k and was pretty rusty. i might buy a jdm engine and tranny with 50k for $1000. not sure yet though gotta find out if its fixable.

heres the pics:

holy **** man, thats crazy. Looks like you threw a grenade at it. Just get the Jdm motor, save a whole bunch of spare parts from that motor(sensors, starter, dizzy, etc) and trash that thing.

so no one thinks its worth fixing huh? cuz he told me it would only be $150-$200 to fix it. hes welded magnesium, aluminum housing on transmissions, and turbo housings before. if no one thinks its fixable then im not gonna get it fixed despite what he says, but he is saying that it wouldnt be a problem. i dunno, any more advice?!?!

I think with a hole that big I would ask for a guarantee and a warranty.

i think it can be welded back on no problems.

price sounds kinda steep though. it should only take him a few minutes if you clean it up yourself.

I think it can probably be fixed, I just don't think you'll have any luck finding a welder capable of actually fixing it. I'm sure you'll find tons who'll tell you they can fix it, but they are few and far between. I just bought a new honda b pipe for my civic because I twice had the muffler welded on and twice it fell off 2 months later. Thats mig on shitty thin steel pipe and I couldn't even get that done right. Welding aluminum is 100x more difficult.

aluminum block right??

most any guy who has his own quality tig welder and actually uses it often will be able to knock that out for you.

You're best shot is to try and find something local for two reasons:
Shipping costs
Warranty issues (if any arise).
Even if your local Auto Recycler doesn't have a 22B2 on hand, he can locate one.

I just don't want you to find yourself dealing with some shmoo thousands of miles away, hiding behind a telephone if a problem arises later. At least with the local guy - you know where he works.....
