No more riding for me. Found out I have a bone tumor. Yay!
To make a long story short, I've had upper arm/shoulder pain for about a year and a half. After seeing three doctors, one finally suggested I had an MRI done of my shoulder...and they found a benign bone tumor. It's called Fibrous Xanthoma and I feel pain from it every day now. The [freak]ed thing of it all is that I recently lost health coverage (I graduated from UCSB in June) and no insurance companies will pick me up now that I have this pre-existing condition. My Orthopedist said, "no surfing, snowboarding, or riding motorcycles for you, young man". The tumor has weakened my bone and I am much more likely to fracture it in a fall. Surgery will be in a few weeks. Dammit.
Sorry for the large pic. You can see the tumor is in my right humerous, basically replacing the healthy tissue with fatty tumor tissue

wow im so sorry about the whole situation. you should post in GDD and set up a Paypal account. i would donate a few bucks (sorry im a pre med student, and live off beans for food). good luck with everything
wow that's devastating....no insurance especially, see if you can qualify for an indigent program.
thoughts go out to you man, hang tight. everything will work out and you'll be riding in no time

yeah, what herb said. will surgery solve this issue, and allow you to ride in the future?
godspeed on future surgery.

Thanks for the words, guys.
Ya, i"m pretty sure a complete recovery is possible, but it depends on what all they have to do to the bone. If they can drill and suck out the tumor then i"ll be in better shape. If they have to remove a chunk of bone and then use bone cement or do a bone graft, it might not be as strong as normal.
I'm making an appt on Monday to see a specialist at UCLA Med Center...which costs an arm (literally) and a leg, so I'll know more in a week or two. This is just ***** luck for me, guys.

Oh man. I cannot express in words how bad I feel about reading that. I just hope everything pulls through for you in surgery and you have a healthy recovery and could be back on the saddle later on.
Anything you need, just let us know...I'm sure some of the guys in /26 could help in many ways.

Payments are usually less if you're paying out of pocket versus what insurances get billed for, right? I'm sure a payment plan can be worked out.
Best wishes for a speedy complete (and inexpensive) recovery!!!!!

Sorry to hear that. I hope to hear good news about your future post surgery.
I definitely think that payments would easily be accepted given the extent of your condition.
I think the paypal thing will work, and like many people, I wouldn't mind donating some money, especially for a good cause such as this.

Thanks for the offers to help out. I don't qualify for and indigent health program b/c I make more than $1800/mo. Like was mentioned, I'll probably have to work out a payment plan and just bite the bullet on this one. The longer I wait = the more extensive the surgery and more likely a repeat tumor will be.
Luckily, my parents have offered to help out with the bills, too. I won't be setting up a PayPal account or accepting donation, but I'll take all the good wishes you guys can throw towards me. Thanks again, good to know I have some support from many people I've never met

How long is the recovery period going to take? I've got your next trackday for '09 or whenever you're all set.
That should be incentive enough to heal!! If not, I'll have Rob dance almost completely naked for you - he'll have his helmet on at least.

Not sure about the recovery period, but I'll be back on 2 wheels as soon as I can. Let's try for an HT track day at some point in Jan/Feb. And if I can beat Rob's best lap time, he's gotta run down the hot pit at BW wearing only a helmet. I wonder how many kittens will die after that one

i was gonna quit my job last year and move on and i decided to stay. well a week later i was diagnosed with a really rare form of leukemia. thank god i stayed, 6 monthes of chemo/radiation, monthes of hospital time, and a bone marrow transplant add up. medical bills/presriptions/dr. visits are expensive as hell with insurance, and i have a really good plan.
if i didnt have insurance i wouldnt of got treatment or the transplant so i thank god everyday. i hope everything goes well for you, alot of diaseases can start from joint/body pain. i had really bad back pain and they found 4 compression fractures and the cancer was eating away at my spine
good luck with everything
