Default Transmission or computer/TCM?

Hello my 91 Accord EX Auto Trannt stays in thurd gear. At 3,000 rpm i can do about 45 mph. No chattering, no slipping just starts out slow and goes down the road fine at 45 mph. could this be the computer/TCM???

How can I check it or tell if it is the tranny???

Thanks.

First thing to do, check for codes....jumper the Blue 2 pin connector at the top of the passenger side kick panel, turn on the key, watch for 'D4' or'S' lite flashes.

TCM failure in those cars is fairly common, sometimes you can reset[power disconnect] and the trans will shift normal again for the first time thru the gears.

Without a flashing D4 TCM code firing off in your eyes, I would suggest the possibility that the shift control solenoid(s) require cleaning (or more accurately, the screens UNDER the shift control solenoids). Honda puts them in there to catch any Cr**p that might circulate and I've seen some serious blockage in my time.

And yes, the TCM's are known to fail (actually go stupid) from a set of capacitors which go funky and cause all manor of havok.

Great advice. Oh yeah, one thing I failed to mention. The Green "S" light is constantly on. The CEL comes on once I have driven it for about 5 minutes so I will jump it and see what flashes.
What does the "S" light indicate???

When you state power disconnect, I assume you mean to disconnect the battery for a certain amount of time and it will reset the TCM?

The "s" is the equivilent of a flashing D4 on later models. It's an indication from the TCM that a fault has occured. If your speedometer still works, go locate a TCM (Transmission Control Module) and install it

salvage yards often refer to them as Transmission Brain Boxes. You can find them on EBay from time to time; although you always take a chance buying used.
