would like to know if 215 40 17 would fit my 90 accord without any problems.
10 millimeters (205 to a 215) isn't going to make a whole lot of difference in tread width (where you want the improvement) since that spec discribes the Cross-sectional dimension of the tire.
The 215 is considered by most as the largest size you can mount without delving into the "Mount and Sample" approach.
If the offset on the rim you've selected is "stock" you "may" get by.
Surprisingly, it isn't so much the front that's the problem, but the rear.
Up thru the 1997 model year Honda uses a rear hub assembly on the Accord which incorporates an "arm" which anchors the hub to the upper rear ball joint.
With a standard suspension and a 205/60 x 15 on an alloy SE rim (15 x 6), this arm resides no more than 3/8" behind the tire. You can see where a wider tire on a stock offset rim may cause problems.
