Default Help - jumping out of 5th

Just the day after a meet and 300 miles in a day, she starts jumping out of 5th

Keeping hand on shifter to feel what's going on: it sits quite happily (same road two nights in a row, eh??) it simply jumps out of gear, revs jump 2-300. If I have a bit more of a hold on the sifter: jumps about half way out (car keeps going), needs clutching to put back in.

MB6, S9B tranny, shifter bushes & linkages all fine, "new" clutch.

Long story short - help.

Dan.

Had to drain the fluid to change the clutch, it's got about 85% brand new fluid, the rest was about 8000 miles old as I changed it about 6 month ago.

Also - fastest reply I've ever had on a forum, wow!!

ok, so I've checked the fluid, it took about 300ml to make it run out of the top hole, somehow the bolt wasn't as tight as I'd normally put it, but never mind.

We put it on stands and ran it in the garage tonight, it tries to whine a lil bit in 3rd, whines at a low tone in 4th, whines at a higher tone in 5th. I'm wondering if the end bearing on the mainshaft is dying, but I don't know the order of the syncros on the inside. Is it (going from the engine side) 1,2,3,4,5 ?

Apparently repair parts have to be genuine from the dealer, says one rebuilder. So I'm on the hunt for an S9B tranny if anyone knows of one sitting and how much it is

it could be acouple things.. bad syncros wouldnt cause it to jump out of gear they would cause it not to shift at all and just grind.. the little bearing on the clutch i think its the pilot bearing? could be bad mine was doing the same thing when i bought it tore it down for a clutch and found i didnt even have one.
could also be the shifter bushings are tore up really bad and the shifter has too much play

hmm, so not likely to be the syncros. I've just replaced the pilot bearing when doing the clutch, I hope it's not that, would be a bloody big job for a rather small item
I've changed the shifter bushes for red polys, they're ok, but there's still a lot of shifter play, about 2 inches wobble in any gear.
I'm thinking it could be the bearings on either of the shafts, I don't think it would matter which shaft, likely to be worn as much as each other. But the progressiely more noise is speed related, not rpm related, which points me towards the 2nd shaft's bearings, I'd still want to change all of them though. Seems a little difficult to get a price online for box bits.

not sure or not but the linkages might be adjustable u could take the slack out of em.. never really tried to mess with them all that much though so not sure.. 5th is a toughie its usually 1-3 that pops out..

what kinda noise is it? but most likely there is slack somwhere in the shifter mechanism that is allowing it to bounce out of gear

just throwing outa idea, usually play involves the bitch pin connecting the linkage to the tranny, seems dum, but everything else is leaning towards bearings.

its the pin that connects the tranny to the shift linkage, some people use a screw and nut, but that allows a lot of slack in shifting, you shifter would be looser then a ****** **** if you had the screw combo, but the bitch pin might not be all the way in ill try and find a diagram for you.

It could be syncros, but honda started doing something like one of the guys on here already said to where if it is running low on fluid it'll jump out.. I'd just look for another tranny unless you can take ur tranny apart or know someone close that can.

Hmm, I could take it apart, but the cost of the parts to repair it, hmm, I'd want to make it like new in there, so likely to cost as much as a recon box or used box. Quicker to just get another & swap it.

Cheers guys

my car did that when i was low on tranny fluid. and it would make a loud *** wining noise. but i could hold my shifter in gear and i would feel it try to kick outa gear but i didn't let it lol.

maybe you mixed diffrent types of fluids and it slowly fried your synco's.
