Remeber My "Broken ITR Diff" Topic? Try Broken ATS 4.949 FD!!!
That's right folks, remember when I posted how I thought my ITR diff took a crap and all?
Well we pulled the tranny out today and I found an ATS counter shaft completely DEVOID of any teeth! Combined with the half-toothed ATS ring gear I had a stellar combo for acceleration!
Quick rundown:
I got 2 months of use out of my ATS 4.929 FD before it broke
In those 2 months I took it to the dragstrip and ran 14 times and then I got to run 1 auto-X with it as well. Ohter than that it was just daily street driving.
So the question is how do I feel about the ATS 4.929FD?
Well aside from it breaking and the ATS distributor telling me I'm **** out of luck in terms of any warranty, I still like the ATS FD. I'm too used to the pull of the 4.929Fd to go with anything else, so I guess the moral is don't drive your ATS-equipped cars too hard or they will break.
I guess I'll see what I can do, but for now it seems as though the ATS FD is the only way to go for me.

I was kind of hoping it was the diff so I could swap in a Quiafe, but I can get the ATS quicker so this might be a good thing.
What do you guys think about the ATS breaking?

Damn Tom. I guess no more 14 trips in 2 days down the 1320 hunh?QQQ That's good news to the pocket book anyway.
Oh and Willard if you knew the type of Clutch Tom was running that is probably gonna be the hardest thing to break. Can you say clutch from hell. lol.
Hey Tom I finally got all the parts I need to fix my car. It'll hopefully be back on the road in 2 weeks or so.

Ummm...just looking at this:
it sounds like it was abused...not that I'm saying that it was...but look at it the way a retailer would see it...you either didn't install it correctly, or abused it(<u>This is not my opinion...I'm just trying to figure this one out
</u>)

I beat the **** out of my ATS and I've had it for a good 5months with no problems. I don't have a mad clutch or run slicks, that might be one of the causes. Sorry to hear that.
uhhhggg...this is discouraging news. I WAS extremely excited about getting a 4.9 ATS FD...now im not so sure. I beat the hell out of my car, and if I cant beat it with the FD in there, I dont know if i want it. I didnt realize it had such durability issues. why does everything cool have to break
if it seems too good to be true....

Tom, Im sorry to hear that what happened. I guess when it rains, it falls. Im experienced my own and *knock on wood* Im glad its over the time being.
Tom, you abused your ****! Haha j/k I can see how it wouldnt be covered but if an ATS cant take that, provided it was installed correctly, I wouldnt want that piece.

Sorry to hear about all the problems you are having.
The same thing happened to me on the ITR countershaft. I barely got a chance to beat on the trans.
Did it look a little something like this?

This is the first time I have heard of an ATS breaking. So this could have just been a manufacture defect or a freak accident. Everybody does not need to get scared or start freaking out that there ATS is now going to break. Untill I head about 10 more cases of ATS's breaking I'm going to stand by my recomendation of doing the ATS FD
Wow, I can't believe that. How can the manufacturer not do anything about this? You didn't even use it for that long.
Aren't those somewhat pricey to get another?

I notice that nobody seems to talk about breaking in gears on this forum, but it is a common topic among 4WD heads.

B18C5-EH2, did you get on it soon after installation?

I just didnt realize they were that prone to breaking. Ive driven the **** out of my stock ITR tranny, and never had a problem. I guess I was under the impression that the ATS would be bullet proof and could take a serious beating
Oh, I have payed...but have yet to play

i disagree.......everyone pull out their ATS. ill buy your used **** for 200 dollars a pop. And get rid of your high dollar headers and forged wheels......ive heard about cracking issues when rained on.......lol
nick, who would love to see everyone (stunnaz) freak out.......=cheap parts
I heard MF10's could suddenly fly off your car with out warning causing you to crash. Please everybody remove your MF10's. And out of good faith, I'll buy them off you for 100 bux a rim to help you all out
Oh yeah, this only happens on 43mm offsets because they are the only ones that will clean my calipers...errr i mean they are the only ones prone to breaking

Really? That reminds me about what I heard concerning Spoon calipers. Due to the increase in piston quantity/pad contact, the brakes are more prone to catching fire. I'll pay any Spoon caliper owners $10 for the set. If interested, please IM me
.....imho:
I have used the stocker and the ATS final. ATS is at least as good as the oem part.
You can break anything. Choose your poison.

Jesus - we have a SINGLE final drive fail and suddenly they are 'prone' to breaking. Hello.
