for a quick answer, any cold air intake will do just fine, all depending whether you want a carb legal one or not.

get a cheap cold air off of e-bay then buy a good filter for it thats what i did and it works and sounds great. and make sure u know the difference between a short ram and a cold air intake...

Also there is a MAF sensor in the intake. I know some name brand intakes have had trouble with getting the sensor to read correctly, I can only imagine what potential issues an ebay intake would have....

This works great for the old J-Detro/speed density based engine management. Not so much on these newer Honda's L-Jetro engine management.

Before posting info like that make sure the person actually lives in California where it actually matters.

I've been wondering the same thing. I want to get a K&N SRI (Short Ram Intake), but I was told that it wouldn't help me unless I upgrade the exhaust. Is that true? I don't want my Civic to sound like a PO'd bumblebee ricer.

Seriously, it's really annoying to see people throwing the word C.A.R.B. when a lot of people don't even know what it stands for or when they start telling people that don't live in California that they can't legally change the part unless it's C.A.R.B. certified/approved/exempt. What takes the cake is when another non California resident tells another non California resident that they need to concern themselves with it.
California Air Resource Board, it only matters in CALIFORNIA.

what does tested mean? do you mean it's been installed on a few other LX's?
did they check the A/F ratio or are they just guessing it's ok?

Like who? Care to provide proof of your claim??
ANd while you're at it how about digging up a link to an actual good high quality ebay intake.
Go ahead......we'll wait.

I can't say how reliable Ebay CAI intakes are on the 8th gens because of the MAF but when I had my Integra, it didn't matter where you bought your intake.
My friend's ebay CAI did just as good if not marginally better (dyno-wise) than my INJEN CAI and the ebay CAI was 4x cheaper. The tube design, diameter and length was almost identical. As a matter of fact, aside from the injen sticker and a few minor cosmetic differences, we couldn't even tell which was which. Come to think of it, the ebay filter was better than the one that came with my INJEN.
Any other car I would recommend an ebay brand intake with an aftermarket filter (APEXi) but considering our vehicles, I would stick with the big name companies because A/F = scurred.

I have a friend who bought a short ram intake from ebay, its true that it is very light and pretty thin (lighter than most named branded ones) thats why its cheap! Its wont break or bend that easy unless its somehow abused or installed incorrectly. I guess what matters most is the filter you put on it. I built my own intake with pcv pipe and it works the same. All it does is suck in air, and it all works the same.
There was a test done in one of the import tuner magazines about cai sizes and its effect on hp, the result is that having a very small or big intake size tube actually hurted the performace by like a couple of hp.
The only thing I can think of that will hurt the different types of intake from ebay to a brand name one is the tube's ability to absorb heat from the engine.
Ebay's cai's are thin and would absorb heat faster than a brand named cai would be my opinion.

This was tested on an Impreza with an ebay cai

*Note at 4800rpm, the Ebay intake makes 94.88whp vs the stock intakes 84.88whp. A full 10whp difference in some areas on a 2.2ltr engine.

At the same rpm point, the Ebay intake makes 103.33lb-ft of torque vs the stock intake 92.43lb-ft of torque. That's a 10.9lb-ft of torque increase. Not bad at all.
Here's the breakdown of how the Ebay intake is from the bottom of 1st gear to the top of 3rd gear.

Heres some pics of different intakes
I dont know if you've seen k&n but lots of their intakes are plastic
BBk intake
AEM

fujita
forcefed
ITG

injen
A lot of these are straight pipes with bends in them, I say the filter is very important, I would not put on an ebay filter, but it would still use an ebay pipe
now for some pvc fun

I have to agree with you up until AEM revised there design to include a MAF housing insert and a upper rad hose to clear the intake for the Si.

Impreza with an ebay CAI in 2005 is relavant how?
I mean, if your dynos are relavant then this should be relavant too right? Even WRX owners have issues with MAF sensor reading and A/F ratios with intakes: http://www.clubwrx.net/forums/....html
All of those pictures of intakes for random cars is relavant how?
It's not the pipe that there's a problem with. It's the MAF sensor housing that is a potential issue. Even well known companies that makes high quality products have had issues with the MAF sensor. AEM being one of them and K&N being another.

Yes sir
Kidnkorner
Back to the rest of you guys:
AEM actually took the time to correct the issues they had.
Do you think ebay intake manufacturers would do the same thing?
Do you think they've even dyno tested their intakes?
Not someone who bought the intake dyno-ing it (like your example with the impreza) but the manufacturer.
